My Colleague Got Fired for This 1️⃣ Mistake
It Wasn’t Just One Thing, but One Thing Tipped It Over the Edge
My colleague. The best developer in the place who wrote wonderful code and fixed the problems that none of the rest of us could.
The Context
One day he called me on Slack. Crying.
He had another 20 minutes before they shut off the computer and he would lose access to all company data.
They’d told him that his time with our company was over, and it was time to develop elsewhere.
Luckily, he was already at the final stages of another company (at Twitter lol. Don’t worry, he was let go again recently) but the upset of being let go was so much to bear.
So, what happened to this talented developer?
The Critical Mistake
I don’t know about you, but my job is pretty easy. You deliver trivial tickets, and everybody is happy. He burned through all the refined tickets including pulling in anything that could be worked on from the backlog.
My colleague not only did this but also kept delivering in other ways. In fact, they completed tickets the fastest of any comparable developer. The quality was also rather fantastic.
