Yes, it is true. Email can act as a basic, no security, receiver of SMTP traffic; it can then pass it along. So besides just for testing or acting as a local Email sink for alerts and other generated events. You can also use it as a basic SMTP Proxy sending all SMTP messages somewhere with routing and enrichment.
