I think he would, but my not very serious suggestion involved power returning to Parliament on the Queen’s demise.
It’s a circuitous argument. In a country with lots of guns, you sit in Flint or Detroit at night and hear the gunshots ringing out, so you want to be armed. In a country with almost no guns, you sit in London and don’t hear gunshots, and don’t need to be armed. The problem with the US gun debate is that it seems to come around full circle to saying…
hi Chad,
Thanks for your considered response. They are fair points. In the UK, people who live in the countryside, where they may need to deal with foxes attacking their farm animals, for example, do keep shotguns. As outlined, these are tightly regulated and licenses only granted if there’s a clear need.
Surely the only logical conclusion of saying teachers should be armed is that they will use those weapons to protect students by shooting people, who in these cases also tend to be students or former students.
Looking at this from the outside, from the UK, it’s bizarre because we just don’t have many guns. Hearing a…
Tom, it’s a fair point, but a sad one. Here in the UK schools are not protected by people with guns, nor are celebrities, or many politicians. We still love them, we just don’t live in a society awash with guns.
hi Tony,
Your last point is factually untrue. Here is a list of countries by rated by intentional homicide rates. USA is ranked 94, UK is 183, where 1 is most violent. Not sure where you’re getting your information, but it is wrong.
But it is also the guns. Without the guns, people could not shoot each other. As evidenced in the UK: https://medium.com/@tswriting/why-the-uk-has-no-guns-a345601b6a11
yes, it is a bit embarrassing that you wrote:
“ A clear majority spoke their mind because they got sick of being fed the same garbage from everyone.”
A clear majority voted for Hillary Clinton, perhaps fed up of being fed the garbage that Trump peddled during his campaign.
Do Policy and Logic ever go together. Yes, for example with the UK law enforcing the wearing of seat belts, which has saved hundreds of thousands of lives… the smoking ban, ditto, and trying to cut back on the use of plastic bags in supermarkets… , no?
in fact, even just give me one example of a single point you can show is untrue…
