College Graduation
Getting through college can be really tough for many individuals. The main goal is to take the years allocated to get the degree of their choosing. Sometimes a plan is never implemented to reach this goal, others come fully prepared and knock down their classes with ease. Upon enrolling in the University of Akron, I noticed that the graduation rate is below par in my opinion. According to college factual, only 42% of students graduate on time at the the college. Why is this? Why do many have so many struggle with getting out with their degree in time?

The University of Akron has a very high acceptance rate, at about 95.7% last year, according to US News. Many individuals choose this college because of it being so easy to get into and the constant pressure of high school counselors pushing for college. Am I saying that the level of intelligence is low in the school? Of course not, however, I do believe that many that come to the college should not enroll in the first place. College is a serious matter and the ones there for that would love to have as much of the schooling paid for by the college itself. If people who are going to drop out within the first year come and get financial aid, that leaves less for the ones that are here to really try their hardest to achieve their goals. It is hard to maintain a great graduation rate with the way that students are in and out so quickly.

Financial aid is a big part in student completion. Expenditures on student services, much like aid are needed to keep students happy and calm when it comes to the thought of future debt. Recently the Spring Fest has been announced, yes this is a great thing, but what are the costs? Bringing in a well-known artist like, Kid Ink, definitely has to cost a pretty penny to have. Where could this money go? How could it be used for anything other? Well giving out extra financial help to the kids that do well in their studies and bust their butts to get the grades they have deserve to get a little extra help to continue their schooling at the university. This is a fun even that the college would love to keep as a tradition, but spending less on rappers and more on student success inside the classroom would benefit much more.
The Wayne branch of the University of Akron has been doing a tremendous job at helping the students that attend. I would say roughly 2,000 students go to this branch and not one could tell you their is not a time that they could go to get help. This is typically a area where students go for 2 years and leave for the main campus. The whole staff here are really great at getting help to those who ask for it. Their is a help center called “Smucker’s Learning Center” where there are tutors located that are willing to help students get the help they need for classes. Advisers are also ready to help when needed, even when they are short staffed at three. It takes no time to get in to talk to someone who can help, whether it be tutoring or discussing future classes and completion.
As many can see the University has problems with maintaining a great graduation rate. With Wayne doing a great job at helping its students, the main campus could take that success and try to transfer that over to their location. Allocating more money towards helping out the students financial state is key in keeping the students in school doing what they need to get to their future careers. The college is understood to be under a lot of work to bring the best for their students. Boosting this graduation rate of course will not be easy and will take sometime, but eventually the University of Akron will become a great school where students finish in a timely matter and earn their degree.
