Beginner Yoga — Child’s Pose
The Child’s Pose is so-named because it looks like the default position of a lot of babies and toddlers.
Why the Child’s Pose
What the Child’s Pose (Sanskrit: BALASANA) is meant to do for you.
This pose is great for stretching your back and the muscles around your hips. It is called a restorative pose and that’s probably because it is a very natural position for our bodies to be in, as evidenced by the many babies and children that can be found using it.
While stretching your hips, back, and thighs, you are also releasing stress that you may, or may not, be aware of. It is a great pose to rest during your exercise routine.
Doing the Child’s Pose
- From the Table pose (on your hands and knees), lower your hips to rest on your heels and lower your head to the floor.
- Position your arms. You can stretch them out in front of you, if you are able. If not, you can place your hands under your head (kind of like a pillow) or beside your body.
- Breathing slowly, press your belly against your thighs while inhaling. Relax while exhaling.
