Title: The contents are great but it arrived mildly damaged

Review: This book is awesome, I’m glad it includes porpoises. It’s too bad it arrived mildly damaged. I’ve included a photo with a circle around the tear on the back of the book. This may have happened during shipping. It’s still a useful book so I intend to keep it.

Title: Has actual pictures and not just drawings

Review: This is a great field guide because it shows actual pictures and not just drawings. Cetaceans can look very different within the same species. Seeing actual pictures of at least the typical is very helpful when trying to identify cetaceans in the field. This guide also does a great job in the descriptions and what to expect the cetacean to act like.

Title: Not quite right for me, I’m afraid

Review: Intending to go whale-watching for the first time, this was one of two books I looked at. (The other was the DK handbook “Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises” by Mark Carwardine: see separate review.)
This one has 384 pages, describes itself as a “field guide to the marine mammals of the world” and its coverage is REALLY comprehensive: whales, oceanic and river dolphins, porpoises, dugongs, manatees, sea lions, fur seals, true seals, marine otters, the walrus and the polar bear! The introduction defines marine mammals, describes their evolutionary relationships, their natural history, their conservation and how to look for them.
The main part of the book (339 pages) then covers the many species, section by section. The guide “seeks to create a user-friendly identification book” by featuring within every species section an “identification box” (containing priority characters on surfacing and typical behaviour at surface), followed by illustrations and further data on distinctive populations, similar species, variation, distribution, population and ecology.
As far as I can tell, speaking as an absolute beginner, it seems to be a work of considerable scholarship, thorough, systematic, and absolutely crammed with information. The photographs and Brett Jarrett’s beautifully drawn illustrations are all in colour, and the entire work is printed on good quality glossy paper. It weighs (a consideration, for field guides) about 600 grams.
My only problem is with its layout and presentation. The species sections follow each other closely and so begin — as often as not — part way down a left or a right hand page. While this undoubtedly saves space, it results in a rather bitty overall appearance. Also, every “identification box”, crucial to on-the-spot recognition, has the same faint lilac-tinted photo of breaching dolphins as its background which, unhappily, interferes with the legibility of the small black print on top of it. A plain background would have been so much better.
I don’t feel qualified to criticize this book on its content. However, for my own use at my present stage of knowledge, its wide range is more than I really need and I also wonder whether the sheer density of its content might be a bit off-putting for the younger reader. In the end, the relatively limited scope (whales, dolphins and porpoises only), much clearer presentation and lesser weight of the DK handbook gets my vote.

Title: Excellent field guide

Review: This is one of the best field guides that I had the pleasure of consulting. The illustrations are excellent and cover very well the intraspecific variation of each species, indicating for each the diagnostic features. The text is concise and yet very informative. It is very clear that the authors are really experts on the subject and have first-hand experience with most of the species treated in the book (a not very easy task considering the rarity of many of these species and inherent difficulty in studying them). I highly recommend it for anyone interested in marine mammals.
