If you’re not grabbing lunch with incredible people, you’re doing something wrong…

(NOTE: this was pre-COVID)

Over the course of my internship during the summer of 2019 on the IBM Austin Campus, it would be a strange occurrence to see someone not genuinely enjoying their job. When I walked to the snack room (yes, the snacks are free), I’d see designers constantly inspired and ready to flex their design muscles with the bleeding-edge products that IBM works on.

As an intern at IBM, you’re in a VERY unique position… You’re able to walk around, meet top-notch designers, developers, etc., and even have lunch with them! …

A bit about me…

My name is Tucker Hemphill and at the time of writing this, I am going into my Sophomore year at the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) pursuing a B.F.A in User Experience Design.

While interning there, I have been fortunate enough to have worked on real-life design projects and collect user feedback.

One project that has really stood out was one that got started about the look and functionality of IV poles. This project was started by two Sibley staff members coming into the hub and defining a need. …

Starting in August, 2016 I have been interning at the Johns Hopkins Sibley Memorial Hospital Innovation Hub in Washington, DC. The Innovation Hub is a on-campus human-centered design lab that is housed in a 3,000 square foot room. About three years ago, this room was entirely patient records. After converting patient records to “Epic” (a digital patient record filing system), the room was then converted into a design lab.

Here, we specialize in creating a culture of design within the Hospital. From the second that a doctor, nurse, or staff member comes into the Innovation Hub, they are the lead…
