Learning to Swim, 1885, oldbookillustrations.com

The shallow end of the pool is starting to boil,
pushing us all deeper and deeper,

and many of us are not paying attention
just playing Marco Polo
and pool basketball,
saying the water
getting warmer is nice.

I’m just noticing,
not all of us can tread water,

and not all the strong swimmers
are strong enough
to carry everyone on their backs.

I might be able to carry one person
for a minute,
but that’s it.

It looks like we have about twenty minutes
before being boiled alive.

I’m just going to swim to the deep end,
I’ll take my chances,
and tread for as long as I can.

I won’t be called back to the shallow end.

I’m going with my gut,
maybe
I can reach the diving board.

This one is about that sinking feeling that things are going wrong, and no one seems to notice or care.

I don’t want to be another person fear mongering. Instead I just want to say take care of yourself, swim as long as you can.

You really have to look out for yourself in this world. It can be a harsh lesson to learn, but it is easily one of the most valuable. Having people who understand what you are striving for can be helpful, but no one is going to do it for you.

The swimming pool is slowly beginning to boil. It is time to swim.

Take your chances, swim with all your might to the other side.

Focus diligently on what is working for you, tune out the rest. Be prepared to sacrifice what is worth sacrificing, and attempt to gain the clarity to see what is worth keeping. Maybe this means a little less entertainment, a little more money saved, eating a little healthier, a few longer nights studying. Or maybe its time to rest, save your energy for what is coming, appreciate the hard work you’ve already put in.

It is important in the current state of the world to take care of yourself and those closest to you.

Be well.
