To do a factory reset on a MacBook, follow these steps:

  1. Back up your data: Before resetting your MacBook, it’s important to back up any important data you want to keep, as the process will erase all the data on your computer. You can use Time Machine or another backup method to save your files like using cloud options e.g Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.
  2. Sign out of iCloud: If you’re signed in to iCloud, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud and sign out before resetting your MacBook.
  3. Restart your MacBook: Click on the Apple menu in the top left corner and select Restart.

4. Enter recovery mode: As your MacBook restarts, hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys together until the Apple logo appears. This will take you to macOS Recovery.

CMD Button and R button

5. Erase the hard drive: In macOS Recovery, select Disk Utility and click Continue. Then, select your MacBook’s hard drive and click Erase. Follow the prompts to erase the drive.

Select Macintosh HD in the side pane of Disk Utility and click the Erase button in the toolbar, and select file format APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), as recommended by Disk Utility Click Erase Volume Group. If this button isn’t shown, click Erase instead.

6. Reinstall macOS: After erasing the hard drive, select Reinstall macOS from the macOS Utilities window and click Continue. Follow the prompts to reinstall macOS on your MacBook.

7. Restore your data: Once macOS has been reinstalled, you can restore your data from your backup using Time Machine or another backup method.

That’s it! Your MacBook should now be reset to its factory settings.
