anybody that creates, creates for themselves. authors write the books they want to read and comedians tell the jokes they find funny. the good ones at least. The fads cater to what the public desire. I don’t think Ye or any artist that you like ever made calculated moves to make Matt happy. If you liked it, that was a bonus. Times are changing with the involvement of the internet. 
But you are aware of that being a “Digital Art Director”. Basically adapt or die. Artists with major label funding are not in touch with what the fans want. You speak for Matt. Not for the majority of fans who are admirers and musicians alike. You sound bitter and out of touch. If you want the old stuff, buy the old albums.
