I love speculating on alternative history. I like to dabble in what I call a theory of turning points with alternate history fiction. For example, what if the Americans took the war of 1812 as representative of a “they will never stop coming after us” theory and built up a war machine to conquer Britain and won? Think about how different WWII would have been.

I’m sure plenty of Medium-goers would consider this racist, but something that has got me thinking time and again is how different the world would look if Manifest Destiny had been pursued even further. There were some at the time who believed the destiny was not merely coast to coast, but continental, some even hemispherical. How different would Mexico’s path have been as a US state, rich in resources with access to the Pacific and the Gulf?
