If society isn’t run by people who are sexist, then they ought to be paying men and women equally.

They are paid equally. Where is your evidence that they are not?

Women make up almost half of the workforce, and so when only a few make it to a leadership position, and when there is pay inequality

Well first, saying that so few woman make it to the top is a misrepresentation, because far fewer women than men actually try to make it to the top. Combine the fact that fewer woman than men even have making it to the top as a primary goal with the fact that women tend exit the workforce for years at a time, putting them at an experience disadvantage against male peers, and you have the results we see now, more men at the top.

Second, there is no wage inequality. This has been so thoroughly debunked thousands of times over that it’s almost depressing how regularly it’s still claimed.
