Bottom of the mountain problem

Climbing out of a rut

In May, for a little less than 2 weeks, I practiced yoga daily (or even twice a day) with my sister. I felt the benefits and we agreed we could continue even when we were apart, with both of us using her online subscription to yoga lessons.

4 months later, I haven’t logged in once.

Have I been particularly busy in the recent months? Certainly not. Besides traveling for work, people would say I have a way above-average amount of free time. It is just going nowhere.

Climbing out of a rut is tough. And the luxury of time can work for or against against you. However, if our year is defined by the single action we do most constantly, I sure don’t want my 2017 to amount to — lying on my bed and thinking.

I set my alarm for 615AM, just 1 hour earlier — more time to gather myself in the morning. Maybe it was the perfect weather but it reminded me again how much I love mornings.

Looking back, my mornings are usually obscured by the commute to work, or bad decisions the night before — which nowadays are no longer things like binge-drinking, but more along the lines of mindlessly scrolling Facebook and Instagram feeds.

A confluence of factors have made me decide to kick myself in the butt and start moving deliberately today. I’m still standing at the bottom of the mountain, but at least today I don’t feel exhausted.

Tiny wins

  • Cleaning up the house (🐕 nose bleeds, poo) before everyone wakes
  • Making a good cup of coffee. Sipping it slowly.
  • Enjoying time with 🐕
  • Reading about productivity on Medium
  • Thinking about what is relevant to me and what isn’t
  • Writing this post to remind myself to continue — I haven’t got to the continue what yet, but I know I should continue taking baby steps up this mountain

I did not accomplish much, but perfectionism is also the enemy of getting started.

Step one of many. Here goes.
