Granted that this is a matter of semantics and not epistemology, I will point out that, in your example of individual liberty (which, fyi, is how i try to live my life, to a point), the young couple still:

1.choose to consider the views of others

2. choose how much value to give various views

3. choose to act after considering the situation.

I think perhaps it is not very precise for you to be opposed to 'choosing,' and i say this not to judge your word choice (word CHOICE!), but to offer the view that this word choice is highly likely to create misconceptions about your meaning. Not sure if there is a single word I can suggest as an alternate — but in many cases, communication requires a phrase when a word is not enough to create understanding.
