I personally have not gone through the implementation of str.split(), so a bit difficult for me to answer your question with 100% accuracy. Note that the example is not there to count each CPU cycle. Practically counting cycles is not really feasible. But in cases like sorting once vs ten times, we can safely assume the latter is worse ☺
