Why Social Media?

3 min readDec 18, 2024

Let’s be completely honest with ourselves right now; social media is a waste of time. Can we agree on the surface level for that?

Yes, it can have it’s benefits as you can meet a broader range of people and you can see what’s going on in each other’s lives.

We say this to ourselves, yet use social media in ways to waste time and be unproductive. We use it as our “break”. Constantly doom scrolling trying to fill some void of a feeling you may have. The system is smart because it’ll adjust to what is ‘for you’, hence For You Page.

Or say you have a baseball game, why take a picture of the field you’re at and post it on Snapchat? I used to do this all the time when I played and I can’t understand why. It makes no sense. The only answer I can come up with is ATTENTION.

Attention is a very sensitive word. If someone told you that you were seeking attention, you feel like you got punched. It’s a stinger. To be honest, we all need that punch sometimes because we have all been there at least once in our lives.

The counterclaim to that would be that posting a picture allows people to connect with your personal life and see what you’re up to.

How does this help anybody? It doesn’t. Throw your EGO to the side and realize you aren’t a celebrity. People don’t care that much where you’re at unless you were supposed to be somewhere that you’re not. Then people are looking for you.

JUDGING and GOSSIP are just two issues that arise from these scenarios. For example, let’s say you post pictures of yourself on Instagram. People are going to look at them and immediately have an opinion. It all depends where you are, what you are wearing, and how you look since the last time they saw you.

It makes sense why some take hundreds of photos before they get the one they like. It creates a false narrative about people online that can get dangerous to some extents.

Basically, social media is a waste of time. I am the biggest hypocrite saying that because I use it all the time. It’s almost like an addiction. I recently deleted TikTok and Instagram as my friend and I are doing a 75 Hard challenge. Join us in doing something that’ll change your life around in just 2.5 months.

Time is precious and you can’t get it back. People who are rich, have time and love. Not money. Think about things in your life that really actually matter and things that don’t. Be honest with yourself. When you get a list, cut the things out that don’t matter. Start one by one cutting them off. Call it the ‘Chopping Block’. Make it fun and enjoyable.

Best of luck on your journey of life and always keep God first ❤
