I was able to recover from depression and rebuild my life from the ground-up

I was on the brink of suicide two years ago.

Although I never self-harm myself, I was at a very dark place due to the plans of divorce of my parents. I would drift through days feeling numb and uncertain, knowing the approaching doomsday is only a few months away. Every argument ended with a door slam is a valediction of my hypothesis. I lost connections with my friends, I was gaining weight, and I would hang out with people who are also depressed. I couldn’t see hope for a future.

So, when I came to my counselor’s office in January 2018 confessing my goodbyes, my parents rushed in as soon as they could. After a while, they took me to a nearby restaurant and gave me “the talk.” …

To manage our time productively, we would often set up routines instead of indulging our whim at a moment’s notice. However, the lack of novelty could lead to uninspiring ruts, and that’s what happened to me when I burned out during my journalism internship. I wrote over 20 articles in which 2 were published, and I lacked the expertise to write about subjects I’m passionate about, which resulted in me taking on assignments that I didn’t have an interest in. Coupled that with additional test preparations and classes after work, one day, I sat there on my bed breaking down and staring at the ceiling as I forced myself to produce low-quality pieces. …

Most well-known authors were predominantly white throughout history, but with demands of an anti-systemic racial system increasing, honoring some of the most illuminating stories by black authors in literature is a great way to understand both their struggles and triumphs. Therefore, here are the 3 lessons we could learn from Langston Hughes.

Who was Langston Hughes?

James Mercer Langston Hughes was a prolific writer from Missouri who dropped out at Columbia University. He became one of the earliest innovators of a new literary art form called jazz poetry. He was best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance, an intellectual movement to help African American writers and artists gain control over the representation of black culture and experience in the 1930s. It was during a time where Jim Crow laws — state and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States — was at its peak. At the start of his writing career, he gained notice from New York publishers, first in The Crisis magazine, and then from book publishers. In addition to poetry, Hughes wrote plays, short stories, and several non-fiction works, such as an article in a leading black newspaper during the civil rights movement. …

Pursuing a sustainable writing career is hard, especially on giant platforms like Wattpad. Despite its popularity with millions of readers, only a selected few would be able to profit from their paid stories program. So, I’m honored to interview Bella Higgin, one of the Wattpad Stars who was able to be published by Simon & Schuster in the first-ever officially published anthology of celebrity Imagines and was commissioned by Sony Pictures to write a 5th Wave novelette for a film adaptation. When she’s not reading or writing, Bella could be found rescuing stray animals and dancing barefoot in the rain.

Out of all the books you wrote, which one is your favorite, and why?

That’s a very tough question! Obviously all my stories have a place in my heart, and it’s very hard for me to choose a favorite, but if I absolutely had to, then it would be Belle Morte. …

As writers, we all want to expand our writing toolkit and improve our creative writing skills. However, as restrictions for lockdown are easing up, it’s easy to slip back into mundane routines and claim “having no time” as the new excuse. So, how could you balance the necessity of daily life and the smoldering drive to improve your creative writing skills at the same time?

Here are 3 ways to improve your creative writing skills after lockdown.

1. Story Structure

Contrary to popular opinion, all story elements are all second to one main component: It has to serve the story’s theme.

According to K.M. Weiland, the award-winning published author of “Outlining Your Novel,” the plot is an external metaphor for the heart of the story. Without it, you would fail to pull the disparate parts of your story-plot, character, worldbuilding, etc. into a seamless whole with a cohesive focus. …

Money, credentials, scholarships, and more are all great values you could earn from writing competitions if you have the right strategy.

It’s always scary to have your work judged and dissected apart, but it is the antidote to improving your craft.

For one, it is an indication of professional success. Not only it provides writers a confirmation to measure your growth or ability, and it introduces significant boundaries that force you out of your comfort zone and into learning new skills.

Secondly, it gives you direction and a goal. Without competition, there would be no finish lines and milestones. So having a clear and concise “map” of your next actions is necessary if you ever want to accomplish anything in life.

For example, let’s say you’re joining a local 2,000-word competition about the new Greater Bay Area. Writing in your usual style means you run out of words. The first thing to do is to cut unnecessary scenes to create tighter pacing. Next, you have to shorten passages and update others to make up for the losses. Maybe you need to merge two characters into one or omit backstories that don’t accelerate the plot. The competition has already forced us to confront how stories work. …
