I don’t see what part of this request was polite. You ask for the name, Azer says no, and you immediately start threatening legal action. Just because you’re a big corporation and have lots of users doesn’t entitle you to walk in and demand that this name belongs to you. Sorry to hear about NPM’s decision, I think I will follow Azer’s lead on this one and discontinue using NPM for open sourcing projects.
