As Fortnite reaches new heights, should Sony enlist Epic for a multiplayer project?

Fortnite, arguably the most divisive and polarizing game of the entire past decade has hit new heights recently. With the release of Fortnite OG, a return to the original map that captured the hearts of millions of gamers, the game has never been more popular.

Epic Games has revealed that Fortnite OG brought the largest engagement this title has ever seen with 44.7 million gamers across 102 million hours of play on Saturday, November 4th. On Friday, November 3rd, an even more impressive record was set — an entire third of all PlayStation active users across PS4 and PS5 played Fortnite that day, a metric almost unheard of.

Sony Group owns 4.9% of Epic Games, a minority share that does not permit the Japanese giant the ability to tell Epic Games’ studios what to make, but does give them a higher platform to potentially speak their mind about a potential PlayStation console exclusive multiplayer game. Seeing the amazing performance come out of Fortnite over the years and Sony Interactive Entertainment’s extraordinary trouble producing Games as a Service (GaaS) titles due to Bungie not being the center they once hoped, could a hypothetical scenario where Epic emerges as a large player in Sony’s plans come to fruition?
