LA Runs On Tenzo

It is vital to take care of your body as an entrepreneur.

I take that back, it’s always vital to take care of your body. What I meant to say was; starting a company can come with debilitating stress. Diet and exercise do a good job of combating that stress. Awesome right? Throw a stone at your body you kill both the body bird and the mind bird 🙈

There is no shortage of information on diet and exercise improving mental health on the interwebs. I’m not going to tell you how what to eat or how to exercise. Google that shit. I am more interested in learning how high performing entrepreneurs are treating their bodies and minds in practice. How do they stay balanced and consistent?

I am touching on three main points: Community (how your trench mates can help you stay consistent), grit (how pushing yourself past your perceived limits can help you stretch mental ones) and fuel (how optimizing for energy levels can make you feel like a fucking superhero).

Community

Find your trench mates! What the heck are trench mates? They are a group of close friends with similar ambitions who genuinely want to see each other win every aspect of life. What the heck do trench mates have to do with taking care of your mind and body? Everything — that’s why community is number one baby!

  • They are a key component of developing grit and long lasting fuel (2nd and 3rd on the list). Experiencing the lows is not fun. Watching a trench mate break out of the lows through grit and perseverance is one of the most gratifying and motivating things one can experience.
  • It is much easier to eat right and exercise regularly when you have trench mates who are all committed to performing optimally. It’s more enjoyable to push through with mates. It can even be fun :)

There is a powerhouse crew of trench mates we can all learn from who ran the LA marathon together this year. Tenzo Tea, BAMF Media and YES Theory took down the LA Marathon as a group. Hence the catchy title “LA Runs on Tenzo” 😉 Tenzo Tea is the fastest growing Matcha tea company in the US, BAMF media is one of the most sought after growth marketing agencies in the US and YES Theory is a media channel grabbing the hearts of millions by empowering them to seek discomfort. When I said powerhouse I meant POWERHOUSE.

These teams illustrate how much can be done with some solid trench mates.

Grit

If you follow any personal growth guru’s I bet you have heard talk about breaking through barriers. Mental, physical, work/ career and relationship barriers are referenced the most. The LA Marathon crew and many other successful entrepreneurs I know have figured out how to hack the mental and physical barriers. They do this by actively pushing their physical limits through intense exercise.

  • This works because the mind starts to break down before the body does. When in reality our bodies can endure much greater physical stress then most of us can imagine. Therefore, when we push through the pain of that extra mile, we inherently break through mental barriers.
  • Developing grit transfers to the workplace into speed of execution. When you are busy pouting over that last rejection, they have already been rejected 20 more times. Boom!

Fuel

The talk about managing your energy is increasing rapidly. There is a reason why coffee is the most popular drink in the world and you see a new nootropic (brain pill) on your Facebook feed every month. Energy sells. But selling isn’t all that matters. As people become more and more informed, the type of energy matters too.

  • Instead of chemical heavy energy (think 5-hour, redbull, etc…), entrepreneurs are opting for natural and clean energy. Some of the best ways to do this are in your food and drink. Eat lots of healthy fats (nuts and greens) and drink sugar free, clean products — like matcha or yerba mate. This way, you can stay well fueled all day without crashing OR compromising your long-term health.

Remember, making healthy decisions is uncomfortable and challenging, especially when you’re just getting started. If you want to succeed, start slowly and build up over time. It’s much easier to create habits by slowly adding healthy food and workouts into your daily routine over time.
