First Day In Cozumel

My first full day in Mexico, Cozumel was hot and tiring. After our long day of traveling the day before, everyone was exhausted for the first day of school. We had our first breakfast and morning class and it was still setting in that we were actually in Cozumel!

Once we made it through our first half of class, we decided to go on a “class fieldtrip” and started wandering south of the hotel. The first few blocks were hotels and more popular stores and restaurants, but as we kept walking it became more and more foreign and the Mexican culture started to show itself.

As we started down a side road we found a taco truck. Now, this isn’t an ordinary food truck you would see parked in Toronto. This was a family run taco stand, running out of the back of a pickup truck. You could see that this is where the locals ate, because it was delicious, filling and affordable. They served either chicken, pork or beef tacos at only a dollar each, hence our hashtag “#onedollartaco”.

The taco already comes with refried beans and two shells to roll up your stuffed taco. On your taco, you can get salsa, guacamole, onions and some black sauce. I would strongly recommend not trying this black sauce unless you are insane or spicy food is your specialty.

On our way back to the hotel, with a belly full of tacos, we stopped at the pharmacy to patch up Angelina’s toe that got cut open. Simply walking down the sidewalk I saw things like a man driving a truck rusted right down to the framework with no doors or windshield, an older guy riding in the back of a pickup and families pilled onto a little scooters.

This goes to show the levels of poverty found in places like Cozumel, you would also never see this on the streets of Toronto which is a big factor effecting the vibe in this new place.
