Beaches: Three of the best beaches in Algarve
Algarve is home to an endless series of some of Europe’s finest beaches. The south coast of this region boasts several beaches with photogenic limestone rock stacks produced by erosion and dissolution, they also provide a spectacular backdrop for beachside lounging at any time.
Praia da Marinha, Lagoa
With a series of pinnacles, caves and crevasses, its no wonder that Praia da Marinha has gained worldwide recognition for its photogenic scenery and picturesque views. It is has been ranked amongst the best beaches in Europe and simply must be visited!
The area is not big on facilities so it is advised that you take essentials. The area is also great for snorkelling, so be sure to take your mask. Praia da Marinha, Lagoa is approximately a 30-minute drive from Albufeira.
Praia da Falésia, Albufeira
Located 10 kilometres East of Albufeira is Praia da Falésia, a long stretch of sand that offers one of the most impressive first glimpses of the coast as you make your way down from the cliff top. The beach is backed by an array of stunning red coloured cliffs, which is where the beach has earned its name. Praia da Falésia is approximately a 27-minute drive from Albufeira and this makes it a great choice for families.
Ilha de Tavira, Tavira
Ilha de Tavira can be reached by boat from the historic town of Tavira, as it is one of the spectacular island beaches that sit just offshore. Spreading over 11 kilometres, llha de Tavira offers a number of bars and restaurants as well as a campsite, should you choose to staythere.
It is known as one of the beaches offering a nudist zone, an outstanding bird life and a lagoon side which is great for little children. Ilha de Tavira is approximately at 57-minute drive from Albufeira.
Markets
Known as a colorful fishing village in Portugal, it’s no wonder that you will find an overflowing amount of fresh produce and local markets in Albufeira and Algarve, the region that surrounds it. The markets thrive based on the local ambition and the business that the locals and travelers bring to the area.
Not only are the markets a wonderful place to visit, an opportunity to find fresh and local produce as well as handicraft, it is also a wonderful opportunity to meet the locals and get to know the practices and traditions of such parishes.
When it comes to street markets and fairs, Albufeira has definitely what it takes to be successful and plentiful. At each local market, you will find fresh produce and day-to-day goods, such as fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and also regional sweets and crafts. General hours of the markets are 7am — 2pm or early afternoon subject to availability: it’s advised that you go early as once the fresh produce is sold, many of the stall owners will pack up for the day.
It is highly recommended that you visit Louel for a day trip, though even setting aside a morning, solely for the markets is particularly worth it. Marcato Louel is located just a twenty- minute drive from the center of Albufeira. As you enter the market, the wonderful colors, sights and scents will immediately surround you. There is a dazzling array of stalls which in no-doubt you will find a selection of souvenirs and fresh produce.
Also, be sure to check out Mercado de Olhao, which is a forty-minute drive from Albufeira. Here, you will find two radiant red buildings on the waterfront that showcase an impressive array of seafood, fruit, vegetables, meat and preserves. Surrounding the two market buildings are a selection of cafes and restaurants where you can take in the sun and enjoy the beautiful and unique atmosphere!
