Can Apple destroy the password?
What if your apple device could help make your accounts secure and replace all your passwords?
Imagine if the entering a password was a thing of the past. No more using the same password for all your different accounts. No need to use at least one uppercase letter, one symbol, and 8 characters. No reason to forget your password and become locked out of your account. Apple has a real opportunity to make this a possibility, and it wouldnt be so farfetched.
There are a few new features apple has released/announced in the past year that will bring this idea together. It starts with Touch ID released last year with the iPhone 5s. Touch ID made it possible to replace your lock screen and iTunes account passwords. But why stop there, why not use it to validate all your accounts?
Next was the announcement of Continuity during WWDC 2014. Continuity allows apple devices to talk to each other in ways they have not previously been able to. Macs, iPhones, iPads are all now aware of each other and you will be able to pass off applications between them seamlessly. If you can start an email on your Mac and resume it on your iPhone, what is stopping you from logging into an account on your Mac and validating from your iPhone?
Combining these two features, it would make it possible to replace passwords. Apple says that Touch ID is a self contained unit sending back only a yes or no. If so, this idea could work between two devices. Say you go to log into a website in safari. Your Mac is locationally aware of your apple device, whether it be an iPhone, iPad, or iWatch, and a notification pops up asking you to validate for that login. You place your finger on Touch ID and the apple device will send back a yes or no. It could be that simple.
Of course one would need to own multiple Apple devices to make this a reality. That wouldn’t be a roadblock for Apple, as they are already banking on that by introducing continuity and handoff. I’m not saying its something apple is going to do in the future. But just imagine never having to remember a new password ever again, the security benefits, the time you could save.
But thats the question, could Apple destroy the password if they wanted to? Would you be on board if they did?
