It’s Going To Be Hard
If losing weight were easy don’t you think you’d have the body you want right now?
Don’t you think everyone would all be walking around with abs? You always hear people talking about how simple weight loss is which is true.
Weight loss is simple, eat less calories than you burn every day, stay in a calorie deficit week by week and you will lose weight. The problem is that you confuse simple with easy and they’re not the same thing. Weight loss is simple but it’s not always easy and that’s where the secret sauce lies.
Every time you start something new, like trying a new workout program or trying a new diet it’s never going to be easy.
You’re going to face struggles when you first start off during your journey because what you’re trying to achieve is going to be different and different means uncomfortable. Different means going outside your level of “normal” and trying something that you haven’t before. Different is tough and different can be frustrating but it’s supposed to be.
Just because you need to eat less than you burn does not mean that tomorrow you completely overhaul your diet, your environment and everything else and you only eat healthy whole foods and never eat anything bad then you wake up in 10 weeks and you’re 20 pounds lighter, it doesn’t work like that.
The truth is, it’s going to be fucking hard when you first start out. You are used to eating a certain way, at certain times and you have to begin to change all of that. Yes, you will have to cut out the foods you love. Unfortunately, you’re not a genetic freak and you can’t eat all of the crappy food you want like your colleague Greg who seems to be able to get away with eating whatever he wants, whenever he wants, trains once or twice a week and still looks awesome.
Fuck Greg!
You’re not Greg and as much as that sucks and is unfair there is nothing you can do about it and you will have to put in more effort than him, a lot more. That’s just life that’s just what you’ve got to put up with. The only person you can control is you and your actions and that means you’ve got to put in the effort.
You can’t snack on bags of potato chips every day and you can’t go out from Wednesday until Sunday night for drinks and pizza and chicken wings. You’re going to have to give those things up.
Do you have to fully cut them out of your life and never have them again? Of course not, but in order to lose weight you’re going to have to make some certain changes in those behaviours.
You’ve got to learn to say no to foods and no to all of the drinks and you have to start preparing healthy meals on the weekend and you’re going to have to start exercising more and spend more time active.
At first, it’s going to suck since you’re not used to it and that’s completely fine, everyone goes through this and you’re not alone, trust me. We all go through this struggle. Here are some things you can start off doing.
Change Your Environment
The first thing you’re going to need to do is to change your environment. Focus on what you can control around you and make it work to your advantage.
The easiest place is to start where you live. You control what you keep in your fridge and your pantry and that means you can get rid of all the temptations that are around you. Go to your pantry and your fridge and that secret chocolate drawer next to your bed and get rid of it all, right now. Throw it all away and get it out of the house.
Let’s be honest you don’t have strong willpower, none of us do. You might be strong for a day or a week or even a month, but at some point, you’re going to come home tired from work and you don’t feel like cooking and you just want something easy and “oh hello jar of Nutella” and you crack that bad boy open and go town. When you get rid of those temptations you have no chance of slipping up.
I’m an ice cream fiend and that just means that I can’t keep ice-cream in the house period. If I ever buy it from the shop it won’t even make it home because somehow it gets opened and someone eats it all on their walk home and then I’m left with an ice-cream tub that’s miraculously empty. So, I don’t buy ice-cream ever! If I want it, I will go out with friends to get a scoop of gelato every few weeks to satisfy my sweet tooth.
Give your friends the boot
This is going to be a bit harsh but I’m going to say it anyways. You’ve got certain friends who influence your behaviour. Certain people you know that if you go out with them on Friday you’re going to wake up on Saturday afternoon and try to piece together the last 18 hours of an alcohol influenced epic night. While having benders is fun it’s not good for and you know that. If you’re trying to lose fat and improve your overall health then you may have to take a break from these people or just change when you see them. Instead of Friday night drinks maybe you catch up for lunch on Sunday or see them during the week when you know it won’t turn into a bender. Again your willpower isn’t very strong and trying to go out on a Friday night and not drink while all of your friends do and then they’re also trying to hassle you to drink can be extremely hard and you will cave in eventually.
If there are certain people you just can’t go out with regardless because they just influence you to make bad decisions then maybe you just need to cut them slowly out of your life.
At first, you’re going to feel like you’re missing because all of your friends get to drink and go and have fun and post about it on Instagram while you’re staying home with your healthy dinner and soda water It may feel depressing but remember you’ve chosen to lose some weight and that’s going to come at a cost.
I was trying to think about other things you need to focus on when you’re going to start losing weight, but I feel like those two tips above are going to help you tremendously during you weight loss journey because environment and the people you’re around, affect so much of the way you live.
Focus on those two things and watch how much easier (it’s still going to be hard) to lose weight.
