Dot. Line. Plane.

This has to do with the one thought constantly niggling in the back of the head (presumably not just for me, but for most of us), running round and round like a hamster on a wheel — In any kind of a practice, particularly for a creative practitioner, what is a line of enquiry? How is it defined and drawn out? Is it one singular line or can it be many criss-crossing lines, forming clusters of inquiries ? Just like any other line, is it mapped to certain coordinates? Can it rotate and bend and shift so as to constantly re-position and re-align or does it grow unidirectionally? What if it was a circle of inquiry and not a line?

This has been the theme of recurring thoughts accompanied by frequent conversations..all driven by a deep-seated desire to figure out one’s own line(s) of enquiry. What stays unclear is whether or not this should be topical or medium-based or a domain based thematic found in most of the work done in the past or work that serves to constantly intrigue. Where does one begin in order to see connections and draw out patterns that lead up to the revelation. Or is it a process of constant finding and doing? There is the vast expanse of the breadth, growing ever so wide…but the line(s) is what will bring in the depth.

Is is possible that the line is blurry and blotchy at this very moment for the lack of a clear intent, a purpose, a goal…further ahead into the future…is the presence of an objective pertinent to defining this line on which to lay out the path that needs to be walked upon..or should one just keep walking down the road one is on, as it reveals more and more of itself, till it leads to where one hasn’t been before?

So in a way does one start with the past and the present and forecast the way the line is getting created? Or the other way round — by looking at a vision of the future of where one wants to be and letting that dictate the formation of the line.

As these questions keep surfacing in various forms, they need to be captured while they last..for in their occurrence, may be hidden the responses themselves..meanwhile the search for the holy grail goes on..
