Crystal Blockchain and Chainalysis assist Russians in avoiding crypto sanctions

Here is my short story. I come from a small town in Ukraine, where I initially studied to become a programmer and took my first steps into the IT world. In 2019, I entered the realm of cryptocurrencies, and by 2021, I began working at Crystal blockchain, initially part-time and then full-time. I was immediately drawn to the approach of our leader, Marina Khaustova, and our affiliation with another prominent company in the mining market, Bitfury Group, founded by Valery Vavilov, who invested a lot of time in us, especially in the early stages of Crystal blockchain company.
What our company does in the crypto industry is well-known to everyone — we provide wallet and transaction data to exchanges, assist companies in identifying AML (anti-money laundering) risks related to crypto, such as transactions from stolen or sanctioned wallets. Our business model is SaaS; clients receive a package of checks and access to a personal account with various functionalities. We developed our product as an analog to a leading US solution, Chainalysis. Our main markets have always been Ukraine, russia, Lithuania, Estonia, and others. That was until February 2022.
It was here that a tragic event occurred, dividing our lives and the company’s into BEFORE and AFTER. Until 2022, we had a fairly close working relationship with russia. Honestly, even until February 2022, I didn’t understand the reasons for such close cooperation with law enforcement agencies, especially since none of my colleagues or management seemed to have any particular affection for russia. Fortunately, the offices of Bitfury and Crystal in moscow had closed slightly earlier, apparently anticipating something. Naturally, immediately after February 2022, our company declared its position and completely refused to work with russian clients in any capacity and under any conditions until russian troops withdraw from our territory.
But money apparently has no smell for many. Crystal and our partner companies AMLbot, Getblock, and Alfabit continue to work with russian clients and the market, remaining a popular solution in the exchange market. I am deeply disappointed by the actions of Maria and Valery and intend to bring this situation to the public, even though I understand it may be unsafe for me and several of my colleagues who, like me, oppose and consider this to be a blatant betrayal.
We simply can no longer hide the fact that Crystal continues to actively work with clients from russia, both directly and indirectly. The most striking case for us is the exchange from the scandal-ridden moscow city towers, Garantex. Yes, you’ve understood correctly, it’s that same russian washing machine, covered from head to toe in OFAC sanctions, helping russians bypass international financial sanctions. Garantex alone handles over $1 billion in dirty cash turnover per month. This fact is easily verifiable — just send cryptocurrency with a high-risk profile to the exchange’s deposit wallets via Crystal blockchain data.
This example alone should suffice, but the issue lies in the fact that our software is covertly, and often with our knowledge, used throughout the moscow City Tower and numerous proxy companies across russia, kyrgyzstan, and belarus. Some of these entities are already on sanction lists, like Garantex and Bitpapa, while others are not yet listed but inevitably will be (such as ABCex, Bitriver, Coyote, and many others).
One thing is clear — our company, officially Dutch but with a Ukrainian spirit, has neither the moral nor the legal right to serve an aggressor state and its clients, by helping identify risky wallets and circumventing blocks on major exchanges that legitimately use our software. Another critical aspect is small clients and retail. Historically, Crystal does not engage with small clients directly, relying instead on distributor partners like AMLbot (a Ukrainian company, incidentally supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine), Alfabit, or getblock (both russian, based in moscow) for distribution and retail sales. Analyzing the geographic usage of these services reveals they are predominantly used within russia, approximately 90% of the time.
Regarding AMLbot specifically, I thought these guys were openly against the war and russia. We sell them a significant volume of checks and assist with support. But as it turns out, AMLbot is openly used by us to circumvent sanctions and service a good portion of russian crypto exchanges on Bestchange. And AMLbot is supposedly a company registered in Hong Kong. What a nonsense!
Thus, Crystal indirectly assists in enabling russians to identify dirty wallets and circumvent sanctions and blocks. Perfect! Apparently, for them and our management, money triumphs over evil. Moreover, I’m aware that many of these distributor partners, besides working with Ukrainian retail online exchanges, actively collaborate with russian counterparts. This is now an open secret, utilizing the same Crystal data and sometimes the market leader from the US, Chainalysis. By the way, as far as I know, Chainalysis also maintains a strict policy regarding russians, albeit partially adhered to, and there’s no issue obtaining their software by registering a proxy-ru business in kyrgyzstan or kazakhstan.
Here, for example, the entirely russian company Alfabit refers to using both our system and AMLbot while selling AML services to russian companies.

But in the conditions of war and double standards within my company, I cannot remain silent, knowing that I will likely be fired very soon. This is totally unacceptable!
A request to concerned individuals who read this: please conduct an investigation and take appropriate action. For everyone else, take this as a lesson on how sanctions actually work. Don’t be surprised that everything is still fine in russia!

Розкажу свою історію. Я з невеликого міста в Україні, де спочатку навчався на програміста і зробив перші кроки в світі IT. У 2019 році я потрапив у світ криптовалют, а вже в 2021 році почав працювати в компанії Crystal Blockchain, спочатку на неповний робочий день, а згодом на постійній основі. Мене відразу привабив підхід нашого керівника — Марини Хаустової, та належність до іншої, більшої компанії, лідера ринку майнінгу Bitfury Group, і її засновника Валерія Вавилова, який приділяв багато часу, особливо на початку шляху компанії, нам — Crystal.
Чим займається наша компанія в криптоіндустрії, знає кожен, хто не лінується — ми постачальник даних про гаманці та транзакції для бірж, допомагаємо компаніям побачити AML (anti-money laundering) ризики, пов’язані з криптовалютами, наприклад, коли є надходження з вкраденого або санкційного гаманця. Модель роботи — SAAS, клієнти отримують пакет перевірок та доступ до особистого кабінету з різним функціоналом. Продукт ми створювали як аналог більшого рішення з США, безперечного лідера ринку — Chainalysis. Основними ринками для нас завжди були Україна, росія, Прибалтика та країни СНД. Були. Рівно до лютого 2022 року.
Саме тоді сталося жахливе подія, що розділила наше життя і життя компанії на ДО і ПІСЛЯ. До 2022 року ми досить тісно працювали з рф. Чесно кажучи, я й до 02.22 не розумів причин такої тісної співпраці в частині допомоги правоохоронним органам, адже серед колег та керівництва, м’яко кажучи, любові до рф ніхто не відчував. На щастя, офіс Bitfury і Crystal у Москві було закрито трохи раніше, мабуть, вже щось знали. Звісно, відразу після 02.22 наша компанія заявила про свою позицію і повну відмову працювати з російськими клієнтами в будь-якій якості і на будь-яких умовах, поки російські війська не виведуть війська з нашої території.
Але гроші для багатьох, мабуть, не пахнуть. Crystal та наші компанії-партнери AMLbot, Getblock і Alfabit продовжують працювати з російськими клієнтами та ринком, залишаючись популярним рішенням на ринку обміну. Я повністю розчарований діями Марини та Валерія і маю намір донести цю ситуацію до громадськості, хоч і розумію, що це може бути небезпечно для мене та деяких моїх колег, які також як я проти цього і вважають це справжньою зрадою.
Ми просто не можемо більше приховувати те, що Crystal продовжує активно працювати з клієнтами з рф, яких величезна кількість як напряму, так і опосередковано. Найбільш кричущий випадок для нас — біржа з скандально відомої вежі москва-сіті Garantex. Так, ви все правильно зрозуміли, це та сама російська “пральна машинка”, обкладена санкціями OFAC з ніг до голови, яка допомагає росіянам обходити міжнародні фінансові санкції. Тільки на Garantex припадає понад 1 млрд доларів обороту “брудного” кешу на місяць. Цей факт нескладно перевірити, достатньо відправити на депозитні гаманці біржі криптовалюту з високим рівнем ризику за даними Crystal Blockchain.
Цього прикладу могло б вистачити, але проблема в тому, що нашим ПЗ приховано і, часто, з нашого відома користується вся вежа москва-сіті, а також численні “проксі-компанії”, що знаходяться на всій території рф, киргизстану та білорусі. Деякі з них внесені до санкційних списків, як Garantex, наприклад, або Bitpapa, деякі поки що ні, але обов’язково будуть (ABCex, Bitriver, Coyote та багато інших).
Очевидно одне: наша компанія, будучи голландською за документами і українською за духом, НЕ МАЄ НІ МОРАЛЬНОГО, НІ ЮРИДИЧНОГО права обслуговувати країну-агресора та їхніх клієнтів, допомагаючи їм бачити ризикові гаманці та уникати блокувань на великих біржах, що законно використовують наше ПЗ. Інший важливий аспект — невеликі клієнти та роздрібні користувачі. Crystal історично не працює з дрібними клієнтами і для дистрибуції та продажів поштучно використовує партнерів-дистриб’юторів, таких як AMLbot (українська компанія, до речі, допомагають ЗСУ), Alfabit або Getblock (обидві — російські, знаходяться в Москві). Якщо проаналізувати географію використання цих сервісів, то вона на 90% складається з рф.
Про AMLbot отдельно. Я думав, ці хлопці відкрито проти війни і Росії, ми продаємо їм досить великий обсяг перевірок і допомагаємо з підтримкою. Але як виявилося, AMLbot відкрито використовується нами для обходу санкцій і обслуговування доброї половини російських криптообмінників на Bestchange. Причому, AMLbot — це компанія за документами з Гонконгу. Що за абсурд взагалі.
Отже, виходить, що Crystal опосередковано допомагає росіянам бачити “брудні” гаманці та обходити санкції та блокування. Прекрасно! Очевидно, що як для них, так і для нашого керівництва, гроші перемагають зло. Крім того, мені відомо, що багато з цих партнерів-дистриб’юторів, окрім роботи з українськими роздрібними онлайн-обмінниками, активно працюють з російськими. І це вже ні від кого не приховується, при цьому використовуються всі ті ж дані Crystal, а іноді й лідера ринку з США — Chainalysis, при цьому і ми, і вони відкрито виступаємо проти вторгнення рф і заявляємо, що з рф не працюємо.
