Open The Eyes Of Your Mind
Last week Monday, I was looking for quotes to use for my #MondayMotivation. What came across my mind was a line from the lyrics of Asa’s 360°: ‘All you’re looking for is within you’. And that sank very deeply. It’s all about the mindset. If you want to get more out of life, it’s all about the mindset. If you want to move from where you are to where you want to be, you have to think differently. I have always wanted to use my quantitative skills to solve real problems in life. I don’t want to work just for the pay check. I want to create, to build something of value, something I will always be proud of. I want to maximize to the best of my ability my creative energy, whether it is in the arts or in the sciences, in creating the best value. This is very satisfying. Like the joy a woman has after child-birth, you feel solid joy when you conceive an ‘idea’ and bring forth a ‘product’.
Seeking for a way to engage my strengths, I was surfing the web to find a field where there is a meeting point of Math, Computation and X, where X can be any problem. So, I tried Finance and voila, I came across Quantopian. Quantopian is a Boston-based company that aims to create crowd-sourced hedge fund and use trading algorithms to buy and sell securities. So you basically create algorithms, and if it is top-notch, it will be used to trade securities and you’ll gain 10% of the proceeds. 10% in the lines of $24,000. Pretty mind-blowing! You churn out algos in deep work and get paid for what you love doing. So, in order to do this, you have to learn Python, a computer programming language used in the platform. I learnt Python in two weeks! And it has been a snowball effect. From Quantopian, I learnt about Numerai, a similar company, but here you’ll download the anonymized datasets, develop algorithms to make predictions on the datasets.
From Computational Finance, I learnt about the parent field, Data Science, Machine Learning and then Artificial Intelligence. I have written codes, some of which are published in Devcenter. The point I want to emphasize is this: set your mind to what you want to achieve, put your feet in the right direction, and you’ll be amazed at how the universe will conspire to help you achieve it.
“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” ― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist.
Like when I heard that Asa will come for her live concert in May 2016. I have always been a die-hard fan of Asa. A lover of her kind of music. An idea struck my mind: why not make a portrait of her as a token of appreciation for producing valuable content in her music? Snowball effect happens again. With the help of Kenechukwu Uba, my good friend, Akeem Condotti, the event Manager and Janet Nwose, her manager, I was privileged to present this work to her.
The idea of making Photo-realistic pencil images came when I wanted to harness this latent skill of mine. I came across the works of the UK based Nigerian, Kelvin Okafor. Wow! I caught flames in my office. I was thoroughly moved and deeply inspired by his works. The patience and the details he puts in his work is ingenious. This inspired me to refine my latent artistic skills, so I was able to produce Asa’s portrait. So, you need to find what inspires you, then work will no longer be a painful prowl but a passionate pursuit.
Recently, I fell in love with painting, acrylic and beards and my model will be Mai Atafo, the fashionista.
I have started practicing with the acrylic medium. Recently, I painted ‘Apple Under The Sun’. When I become proficient, you’ll see an acrylic painting of Mai Atafo with his beards.
Find your magic, whether it is Creative Writing, Music, Fashion Design, Photography, Coding, Painting or Drawing; step your feet boldly in the right direction, and the universe will conspire to help you achieve your dreams.
