Introduced back in 2014’s John Wick, the last audiences saw of the intrepid assassin, he was being left to once again fight for his life after being declared excommunicado following the events of 2017’s John Wick: Chapter 2. Now with a hefty bounty put upon his head, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum sees Wick fighting for his life and seeking help to save himself from a barrage of ruthless assassins and bounty hunters.
The second chapter ends with Wick being shot by one of his only friends, Winston, before falling from the roof of The Continental. In the final scene, Wick is shown badly injured and teaming up with Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King, with the pair hellbent on taking the fight directly to the High Table. Clearly, Wick has recovered well from such a fall, and will once again ply his trade as he attempts to bring his journey of relentless killing and death to an end. While you would think that Mr. Wick has suffered more than enough across the franchise so far, returning director Chad Stahelski cannot help but think of new, more savage ways to put his hitman through the wringer. “We keep finding new and interesting ways to have John Wick suffer,” the filmmaker explained. “That’s where the action comes from. Figure out how to make him suffer, and then design backward.” John Wick: Chapter 4 will also once again reunite Keanu Reeves with his The Matrix co-star Laurence Fishburne, who believes that the upcoming sequel is the best outing so far. “Number four is gonna be … honestly, when I read it I was like, this is the best one … it just was,” the actor declared. “From the way that it opens, there are like 3 or 4 really incredible set pieces that are just like, woah. There are new characters, one, in particular, that’s so much fun. Well, actually three are crazy fun, and yeah, you know, I got to be in it again. I come back from the dead.” Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, Donnie Yen, Shamier Anderson, Rina Sawayama, Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, and Clancy Brown, John Wick: Chapter 4 is scheduled to be released on March 24, 2023, by Lionsgate. John Wick: Chapter 4 is said to be the longest film in the series yet, and director Chad Stahelski has put the extra runtime to good use. John Wick 4 will feature more mythology and ninjas, Stahelski recently told Variety while doing press for his latest production, Netflix’s Day Shift. John Wick: Chapter 4 will find Keanu Reeves’ titular assassin on the warpath as he goes after the High Table. For those unaware, the John Wick universe consists of a council comprising the representatives from the most feared criminal organizations of the world, called the “High Table,” and they’ve laid out rules that every assassin, mob boss, or even a small-time thug working under them must follow or otherwise face fatal consequences. John Wick broke the rules multiple times and teamed up with the rogue crime lord, the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne), at the end of John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, to take down the high table. Every succeeding film in the series has introduced more of the underworld mythology while exploring Wick’s past and cranking up the action set pieces. John Wick 4 will be no different.
Where John Wick 3 had ninjas on motorcycles, JW4 will put them in cars, but there will be a lot of them, all to be eventually brutalized by Keanu Reeves. “Ninjas in cars, I guess. I don’t know! It’s always ninjas, man,” Stahelski said. Chad Stahelski has always been an admirer of Japanese culture and cinema, with Akira Kurosawa being one of his biggest inspirations, and it’s reflected in Stahelski’s work as well. Furthermore, John Wick 4 was filmed in Japan and features Hiroyuki Sanada and Rina Sawayama in key roles, with the trailer showing them fighting bad guys with Katanas and Keanu Reeves wielding nunchucks. There will also be an epic battle between Sanada and Donnie Yen’s characters. John Wick: Chapter 4 will have a high bar to meet in terms of action. The earlier films, with their brutal yet stylish fight scenes, created problems for Stahelski and the crew on John Wick 4, but they found a way to overcome it, and the film will feature the best action sequences of the series yet.
John Wick is sort of a mythical boogeyman in the films, and even a passing mention of his name has the fiercest criminals cowering in fear. It really becomes challenging to create a compelling narrative with such an indestructible protagonist, but Stahelski says that’s where his best ideas come from. How to make John Wick suffer? John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves, has provided a tremendously promising update on the upcoming fourth movie, with the treasured actor revealing that they are “going for it. “ The John Wick franchise has become well-renowned for its intense, inventive action sequences, and according to Reeves, John Wick 4 will not only open up the world, it will also ramp up the action to dizzying new heights. “They’re fun. They’re intense. We’re going for it. There’s some really amazing John Wick action and new characters and it’s been really fun to be playing the role again and to be telling this story. You know, there’s new characters and we’re opening up the world. Right now we’re just shooting this crazy fight scene in the middle of traffic. So there’s car crashes, gun fights.” Keanu Reeves has had to deal with all manner of madness in the pursuit of vengeance as the titular assassin, from killing people while riding a motorcycle to using books and horses as weapons, but it sounds like John Wick 4 is more than ready to bring its own set of challenges. A fight scene in the middle of traffic sounds like the perfect situation for Mr. Wick, and should result in the sort of unique action sequence that the franchise is known for. The actor also discusses opening up the mysterious world of John Wick ever further, introducing new characters who will no doubt be a mix between accomplices and villains. One such new character is due to be portrayed by martial arts superstar Donnie Yen, who will reportedly play an old friend of Keanu Reeves’ super assassin John Wick, who shares his same history and many of the same enemies. Yen recently discussed working on the John Wick sequel, and had high praise indeed for both lead star Keanu Reeves and returning director Chad Stahelski. “I have to take this opportunity to (express) my utmost appreciation for Chad (Stahelski) and Keanu (Reeves). They’re just lovely men, gentlemen, they’ve got a big heart,” Yen said. “Keanu’s got a good soul, a good man. Chad is also a very good man, very knowledgeable. People think of him as a brilliant action guy, he’s not (just that), he understands films. He’s a film librarian, he knows what’s going on.
