A product recall is done by a company when it finds a faulty product/production batch being released in the market. The same product is called back, the defect removed and then the product has to be replaced or a completely new unit given to the customer. A major reason for timely product recalls is to limit the damage which might be caused to the brand, product, or company image.

Overview/Insights

This analysis was carried out to analyze recalled products in the USA. From the insights generated, the state with the highest number of recalls was California. Also, San Diego which is a city present in California also recorded the highest number of recalls.

Furthermore, the most recalled products were devices, and firms such as ICU Medical Inc. and Stryker Endoscopy which basically deal with healthcare devices had the highest number of recalls. Further analysis showed that products classified as second-grade products are prone to be issued a recall. As recalling products is a correctional measure, this has proven to be effective as 84% of the recall issued has been terminated which signifies that correctional measures have been put into effect and products are cleared to be used.

Therefore, special attention should be given to the second-grade class products to help reduce the number of recalls and to create effective products which are not against the safety of its end users.

Further analysis will be carried out to determine the major reasons behind most recalls made which will help the companies improve on these aspects.

Limitations

The dataset provided wasn’t enough to determine the time frame between product release and its recall to enable ascertaining the level of risk that already occurred.
