The Izzo Swami Sports golf GPS fits into their typical style. This is a highly durable and easy-to-use unit which provides instant distances. It brings the most basic feature set and makes all the yardages easily accessible. This hassle-free operation is akin to, and in most cases better, than the laser rangefinders. It is also priced to match. For a small investment, you can get accurate yardages in a portable package. For us, it was definitely a device worth checking out although we are pampered by the feature-intense handhelds like Izzo Swami 5000 golf GPS handheld.

PROS

  • Affordable
  • Compact and portable
  • Accurate, consistent yardages
  • Auto course recognition
  • Regular and negative display

CONS

  • No hazard distances
  • No automatic hole advance option

Features & Benefit of Izzo Swami Sport GPS Unit

The Izzo Swami Sport golf GPS fills in for a very fundamental device that gives you the distances to the greens without any effort. We checked one out and examined its design and features in some depth.

Design of Bushnell Neo Ghost GPS

- Body:

The Sport GPS is a small handheld device. It’s a curvaceous little table that measures 3.25 inches in height and 2.4 inches in width at the widest point. It’s less than half-an-inch thick. It weighs only 3.2 ounces. The top side has a hole through which you can thread a carabineer clip to hang it off the golf bag. The rest of the space is taken up by a screen and the logos.

- Screen:

This Izzo golf GPS has a 1.8-inch black and white screen. It is quite clear to read with numbers and letter displayed in large font. It is backlit for visibility in light and dark. The screen has both regular and negative display. In the regular display, it shows black characters on a white screen. In the negative display mode, you have white letters on a black screen, a useful feature in stark sun and darkness. Overall, it’s very easy to read the screen even when the unit is placed on the cart or the bag.

- Controls:

The entire operation of the Izzo Swami Sport golf GPS is handled by four buttons. Of these, one is a Power button, two are for up/down scrolling through the options and one is for selecting an option. The operation is fairly straightforward with these.

- Color options:

Although the screen color and logo remains same on all pieces, the Sport GPS is available in four colors: lime green, orange, yellow and grey in combinations with black. We liked the colored pieces as they are easy to dig out of a golf bag.

- Accessories:

It only comes with a carabiner clip and a USB cable for charging. You can either connect it to a wall adapter, which is commonly available around the house, or to a laptop/PC.

Features of Bushnell Neo Ghost GPS

- Distances:

The Swami Sport golf GPS provides only distances to the greens. The distance to the center of the greens is displayed on the top in a large font. The bottom shows distances to the front and back in smaller fonts.

The Swami 4000+ adds hazard distances to the spec which has become one of the essential features. There’s no shot distance measurement either in the Sport golf GPS spec. Like we discussed earlier, this is a basic device.

- Auto Course Recognition:

This golf GPS handheld automatically recognizes the course you are on once you switch it on. It displays a list of the nearest courses based on your location when you switch it on. The connection and course display process take about a minute which is average.

- Course subscription:

The Izzo Swami Sport golf GPS comes preloaded with 30,000 courses worldwide. They cover most of the local courses in the US. Izzo does not charge you any subscription fee for access to the coursemap database. So the total cost of ownership is the price of the unit.

- Battery:

This GPS handheld boasts of an 8-hour battery life per charge. You can get through 2 rounds on this charge. Newer golf GPS units average 12-hour battery lives, so we were a little disappointed by this parameter. It can be plugged in for charge via the micro-USB port at the bottom.

- Accuracy:

The advantage of most Izzo golf GPS devices is their consistent accuracy. The distances displayed by the swami Sport GPS were always within 2–3 yards. And it maintained this streak of success throughout our gameplay as opposed to many glitchy GPS devices that we have used.

- Manual Hole Advance

Unlike most GPS devices, the Izzo Swami Sport golf GPS enables only manual hole advance. You get used to clicking the next button after one or two holes. This is a handy feature when you accidentally swing the golf ball into a different fairway. The better design decision here would have been incorporating automatic hole advance with an option to turn it off.

Izzo Swami Sport Setup

The Izzo Swami Sport golf GPS can be debuted on the course right out of the box, provided it has charge. We charged it for our first game. Once turned on, it automatically acquires the GPS signal. It displays a list of courses nearby your location. You can pick the one you are going to play and get started.

There are other settings for power and brightness. You can pick between yards and meters as units of measurement. You can also adjust sleep time for the screen. It has options to change daylight savings settings as well. All screens show time and battery level.

Conclusion

The Izzo Swami Sport golf GPS is a simplistic device meant to display only the distances to the greens. One might wonder why we can’t simply use a free smartphone app to find distances. Most golfers want to stay away from phones at least on the course. Also, it’s easier to take this small handheld instead of the expensive smartphone out in the sun and rain. As always Izzo dazzles with its ease of operation and intuitive interface. For more similar devices, check out our best golf GPS reviews or Izzo Swami Golf GPS Brands.
