George is tired of living his life how others see fit, he wants to take charge and change his life for the better so he decides to gain knowledge.

But how is gaining knowledge taking charge of your life?

It turns out George understands that knowledge is the key to freedom, knowledge is a gift that no one can take away from you, it’s part of what makes us human, and by using and understanding knowledge you can change countless lives, starting with yours.

Rule 1: Stand up straight with your shoulders back

Isn’t it ironic how the way to freedom and living your life how you see fit starts with someone else writing the rules?

Abstract rules don’t make sense since we all live and experience life differently. The target is to build rules that discipline your life in such a way that you have freedom with purpose.

Before we understand Rule 1, I would like to inform you all that I have set up a Buy Me a Coffee page, if you wish to support me and motivate me to continue writing you can consider checking it out by clicking on the image below.

Stand up straight with your shoulders back has several meanings depending on your reality.

But we will start with a rather simple one, the story of a lobster.

Lobsters were around before humans, they were around before dinosaurs and they followed a very fascinating system to their society, the dominance hierarchy.

It was simple — the stronger lobster would fight the weaker lobsters for a bigger territory and better mates. The winning lobster would continue protecting its territory hence establishing a hierarchy.

The losing lobster would run and hide. As word would travel more lobsters would make way for the winning lobsters, too scared to challenge it, the winning lobster would keep getting rewarded.

To those who have everything, more will be given, from those who have nothing, everything will be taken.

Once a lobster has lost and accepted defeat it will continue to lose until it reaches the bottom of the hierarchy, there it will live running and hiding, living at the mercy of those above it.

Let's change perspectives again, the quote above has another meaning, if I lose I will keep losing “From those who have nothing, everything will be taken’’ but it also means once I start winning I will continue to do so “To those who have everything, more will be given”

This is exactly what rule 1 represents but a mere transformation in posture is not going to fix anything. If you're in the number 10 position, standing up straight in a dominant manner might only attract those who want to put you down.

Fair enough, but standing up straight is not just a physical thing, you are not just a body but also a spirit so to speak, standing up straight is a metaphysical act.

An act of willingly accepting responsibility and the challenge of life, instead of bracing for a catastrophe you're welcoming it, prepared to face adversity. You step forward taking your place in the hierarchy and occupying your territory.

So, attend to your posture carefully, and do not droop your shoulders or hunch lazily, standing up straight represents confidence, when people see you in such a way they believe that you are competent.

People will only believe what you tell them.

As people believe it, you will too, and thus strengthen and embolden, your cycle of climbing the hierarchy begins, confidently accepting the challenges of life and taking action to mold them to your potential.

I hope you enjoyed reading this and that this helps make your life better, if you wish to read the book that these rules are derived from check out 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos.
