Title: A Neat Package
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 18, 2007
Review: Hmm…., Peter and Wendy is obviously a five star book all the way, but what about Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens? Well, it’s not really a complete book, first off. It’s just a large section taken out of an earlier Barrie book titled The Little White Bird. So its very fragmented. Second, since it’s more of a springboard the for ideas that formed the Peter Pan play than anything else, it repeats quite a bit of what we have already seen multiple times in many of the famous Peter Pan adaptations.

Even so, I did get a lot of enjoyment out of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Aside from the first chapter (which isn’t much fun if you haven’t been to the gardens), I was quite entertained. Barrie’s theory that people are born as birds and then turn into humans afterward is pretty wild, and I loved Peter’s interaction with the girl who was captured by the fairies. Peter thought he played games the same way all real boys did but just embarassed the heck out of himself, throwing the hula-hoops or whatever those things were in the water. Poor guy.

So all in all, you have a great introduction followed by a good book fragment and topped off with an all-time classic. Not a bad purchase at all.

Title: Where the story begins…
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 4, 2008
Review: This is where the story of Peter Pan starts and it is a wonderful one at that. Maybe not as adventurous as the better known story of Peter Pan and maybe not really as focused as some may wish. It has a weird, twisted logic to it, as it darts and flies about. But that makes it all the more wonderful and magical. The drawings by Arthur Rackham add to the feelings of a story set in a world long ago and far away.
Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens by J. M. Barrie with drawings by Arthur Rackham is, in fact, chapters pulled from The Little White Bird. Also by Barrie. The chapters dealt with fairies and Peter Pan. So it was turned into its own book.
Peter Pan before he went to Neverland and collected the Lost Boys and met Wendy. But it covers a lot of the same ideas. Floating nests, thimbles, and his mother closing the window on him. There is more to it but it doesn’t really add much to the character of Peter Pan. Though…he is drawn as a baby. So…it looks like he did grow a little between the two books. Weird.
My version was published by Buccaneer Books in 1984.

Title: Beginnings of Peter Pan
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 4, 2016
Review: I read this because I was wanting to read the very beginning stories of Peter Pan. The character has endured for years sparking spin offs on the story. I wanted to look for traces of the characters and events depicted in the later writings for theater and film. It was an easy to read, short story. It was jam packed with fantasy and explains a few things like the reason Peter Pan can fly is because all children start out as birds and Peter kept the flying aspect. But being able to fly made him unfit to live as a regular little boy. There are other aspects such as the fairies that help take care of him which could provide a basis for Tinkerbell. Two times Peter flew to see his mother and the last time she had a new little boy and bars had been put on the window. The bars serve a twofold purpose. They would keep the new baby from flying away and they also kept Peter from returning to his mother. Thus he returned to the park to live with the fairies and birds. There is no mention of pirates or Indians in this story.

Title: A review of Calla Editions’ Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 18, 2013
Review: I have been collecting Calla Editions for several years now and have been generally pleased with the earlier editions. My complaint about the newer editions is in terms of quality. This title, published in 2013, is printed in China. Unlike the older Calla editions (I believe it is 2011 and prior), the paper is not the creamy, vellum like paper that makes browsing through the books an aesthetically-pleasing experience. Instead, the paper on which this book is printed on is glossy paper (to be specific, matte art paper), and although I am not really a fan of such paper, this is made up for by the fact that the book is bound in an attractive dark green cloth.

There are many illustrations, both black and white and color, by eminent illustrator Arthur Rackham.

Title: A Beautiful Volume, Lavishly Illustrated
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 3, 2016
Review: The Calla Edition of “Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens” is a very beautiful volume! The format is the same as a Folio Society volume of this title that was published some years ago but is now unavailable. The illustrations by Arthur Rackham are wonderful. Buy this book as a keepsake volume for a child you love; they will grow to love it even more as they grow up, and it will be something that they, in turn, will share with their own children in years to come.

Title: one of the best pieces of literature I’ve ever read
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 13, 2015
Review: Absolutely delightful; one of the best pieces of literature I’ve ever read. This 1904 play (and later novel in 1911) is so much more deliciously dark and thoughtful than Disney would have you think. Keep in mind that Barrie almost called this play “Peter Pan, or the Boy Who *Couldn’t* Grow Up,” (not the now popular “Wouldn’t Grow Up”) and you’ll begin to see the tragedy in this fantasy. Fans of Lewis Carroll and Roald Dahl have no choice but to read this.

Title: Not Annotated in Kindle edition
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 24, 2012
Review: I purchased the Kindle edition of this book. It is a lovely edition with quality color illustrations, but it is not annotated as the title implies. I spoke with Amazon customer service, and it seems that as of yet, no Kindle books are annotated, although this is not made known to the consumer pre-purchase. Free editions of the non-annotated book are available at project gutenberg dot com.

Title: Peter Pan — the original story
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 16, 2017
Review: Peter Pan is one of my very favorite classic stories — I think I read it for the first time in college and was pleasantly surprised by the details that escaped modern telling — like how Peter’s memory isn’t great — he can only remember one adventure at a time — fun detail that you wouldn’t know from Disney or the play.
