You may have heard about College Hill where past University of Hawaii presidents resided. Listed on the State Register of Historic Places, eight UH presidents and their families have called it home.

The house was built in 1902 by Frank and Eleanore Atherton, members of prominent island families. The property was designed by local architect Walter Pinkham and built for $8,900. The house’s architectural design was a blend of Victorian and Georgian elements with island influences.

For more than six decades, the Athertons welcomed visitors from around the world, supporting many educational and philanthropic endeavors. They had a special interest in their neighbor, the University of Hawaii and in 1963, their heirs donated the property to the university.
