Top Things That I Love About UX Design
I’ve always dreamt of working without feeling bored, and luckily, UX has allowed me to enjoy my day-to-day. Here are my top 5 reasons why I love being a UX Designer..
1. Tasks vary significantly from day-to-day
The tasks of a UX designer can vary significantly from day to day, depending on the stage of the project, the project’s requirements, and the overall team workflow.
I’ll try to insert here a typical morning routine for a UX designer in the tech industry:
- *So this one is a routine wherein I set up my workstation with all the necessary tools, including the laptop, figma, notepads which are mostly notion, and other equipment you’ll use that day either a notebook or drawing pad.
- Then I proceed with checking emails, slack messages, and other communication channels. Respond right away to any urgent messages and prioritize tasks accordingly.
- Many tech companies have daily stand-up meetings where team members gather to discuss progress, challenges, and plans for the day. Ours are twice a week and once for the UX ladies. ❤
- During the meeting, we share our progress or tasks from the previous day, what you’ll be working on today, and any blockers/impediments that may affect our workflow.
- After the meeting, I go back to notion, where I take a few minutes to review my task list and priorities for the day. And then I organize tasks based on deadlines and importance.
And here goes my “sometimes” task:
- Collaborate with other team members, such as product managers, developers, and other designers, to discuss ongoing projects, exchange ideas, and gather feedback.
- Participate in brainstorming sessions or design critiques to improve the overall quality of the work.
- Individual design work which involves wireframing, prototyping, creating UI mockups, or conducting user research, depending on the stage of the project.
- We also have design reviews or meetings with stakeholders or clients to present your work, receive feedback, and iterate on your designs.
- Updating the design system, so we update and develop comprehensive design guidelines and style guides to maintain consistency throughout the product. Especially when Figma released the new features, we have to upgrade how our system works in out style guide file.
- On every design, we have what we call competitor analysis, we do research and analyze competitor products to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for differentiation.
I believe that there are lots of stuff that I haven’t done in my current job, such as UX research, Usability Testing, etc. But as a UX designer, for sure, each day brings exciting challenges and opportunities to create meaningful and delightful experiences for users. Flexibility and adaptability are essential traits in managing the dynamic nature of tasks in this profession.
2. Continuous learning
The field of UX design is always evolving. Designers have the opportunity to stay curious and continuously learn about new technologies, design trends, and user behaviors.
It is fun that we always have conferences and events that gather UX designers from all over the world, may it be virtual or face-to-face.
And just wanna add here the latest UX+ Conference Manila that will happen this September 17, 2023, @ SMX Pasay City, Mall of Asia. And you can visit their website here https://2023.uxpl.us/ to buy that ticket.
3. Collaborative teamwork
UX designers work with cross-functional teams, including developers, product managers, marketers, and more. Collaborative efforts lead to better products and stronger team bonds.
4. Appreciation for detail
UX designers pay attention to the little details that make a big difference in a user’s experience. Crafting a well-thought-out interface brings a sense of fulfillment.
5. Prototyping and Interaction Magic
This one is my favorite. Building interactive prototypes allows designers to bring their ideas to life. They get to create engaging interactions that surprise and delight users.
This is also how I prefer to present, by showing them the behavior of each element or frame that you designed. I find it much easier to explain every single detail by presenting through a prototype.
Being a UX designer offers a fulfilling blend of creativity, problem-solving, and human-centered impact, making it a super rewarding profession for me and for those who are passionate about designing for positive user experiences. Which is really cool.
