Hi everyone, if you are reading my blog then you might know that I was GSoC 2018 student with Wikimedia Foundation. I really loved my last GSoC with Wikimedia and was free in Summer vacations so I thought of applying again. Similar to the last time, I was eagerly waiting to see GSoC results. This time I was not just waiting for my GSoC result for my juniors too. I was quite confident about my selection this time as it was my Second GSoC application with WMF. Finally, on 6th May, I checked the results, me and 5 other students from our club (Cyberlabs) got selected in GSoC. I was very happy to see that. 2 of them in Wikimedia Foundation, 1 in FOSSASIA, 2 in AOSSIE, 1 in Processing Foundation.
During the application period, I was quite happy as I got the scholarship to attend Wikimedia Hackathon in Prague. It was going to be my first International Hackathon. At the Start of the Community Bonding Period, I was spending my last few days in college. I was very lucky as just after my graduation I got a chance to attend the Wikimedia Hackathon
My Hackathon Experience
We were late in joining the event because our flight got cancelled and we needed to take another flight after 17 hours. After reaching Prague, we checked in to the amazing Hotel Diplomat. We ran to the NTK Library for the hackathon as we already missed the Opening Ceremony and newcomer -mentor matching session due to our flight. I was so looking forward to meeting Srishti (GSoC org Admin & Developer Advocate at Wikimedia Foundation), Commons App Team (my GSoC 2018 project team) and of-course Sage & Wes (GSoC 2019 mentors) from Wiki Education Dashboard Project. The Hackathon seemed to be so much amazing and useful for me as both the projects in which I was involved were in the focus area of the Hackathon. I met them on the first day itself. I decided and planned to work with Wikimedia Commons App team during the Hackathon. We worked till 6 pm at the library on the first day and people were going to attend the Hackathon. I met Robin & Sharvani from Wikipedia App team too who were going to help us during the Hackathon. I learned a lot from Robin about UI designing during the event.
We (Me, Pratyush, Vivek and Gopa) went to visit Prague Castle after 7 PM. It was amazing.
On the Second Day, I worked again on Improving the UI of the Commons Android App along with the team. I attended 2 sessions on Saturday. 1st one was an Interaction with Wiki Education Dashboard Users. I also showcased the prototype of the Android App that I made during the Application Period. 2nd Session was from Commons App Team on the Roadmap of the Android App and they explained about the features they are going to implement in the long run.
After the sessions, we went to roam around the city so went to Charles Bridge. Clicked a lot of photos there. During the night time, there was a party at the library and we went to the Party. We had a whole lot of fun at the Party. We tasted many Czech Cuisines and had some beer. At 1:00 AM we went back to the Hotel and slept. Sharing some photos from the party.
3rd Day started with completing the minor UI improvements in Media Details Page of Commons App. After that, we went for clicking a group photo
We attended the closing session and our team presented the final design changes. During the hackathon, I worked with the Commons App team to improve the design of the app. I worked on redesigning the media details of the app.

After the Showcase, we went to an Indian Restaurant to eat Indian food. On the way back to We went stopped at Charles Bridge clicked some photos.
I really didn’t want to come back from the Hackathon. But as the Hackathon was over so we needed to leave. Srishti, Pratyush, Niharika and Vivek dropped us to the Metro station. I and Gopa went to the Hotel and left for our remaining Europe Trip (Salzburg and Venice). The Hackathon was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I am looking forward to the next Wikimedia event and waiting to meet the amazing Wikimedians again soon!
