Review: This is a bizarre book.

It is one of the most physically impressive photography books I’ve ever seen. It is huge, almost unwieldy; truly a coffee table tome, rather than a book you can read in your hands or on your lap. The sheer size and quality are astounding for $65. Beautiful jacket and cover. The paper is nice, thick stock and the printing is well done. The images are sharp and clear. The book’s physical quality is as good or better than any best mass-produced photography books I’ve seen. Each photo gets at least a one-plus pages, causing the book to be well over 300 pages in length. It is a statement piece.

But Yarrow has undertaken all that effort and expense to produce, as he says, a book containing his 150 strongest images from the past *two years*. Anyone familiar with photography will appreciate Ansel Adams’ observation that producing 12 significant images a year is a good crop. Even with all of the advances over the last 50 years, this truism hasn’t changed much.

There are at least a dozen significant images in the book. Some are truly magnificent. But, there are an awful lot of shots that you’ve seen literally hundreds or thousands of times before. The sheer size of the book helps to mask some of this (bigger is always more impressive), but it can only elevate the mediocre shots so high.

Moreover, while Yarrow has grouped these photos into categories, the categorization is somewhat bewildering. Most of the photos focus on wildlife, but Yarrow has also interspersed portraits, landscapes, staged group photos, industrial photos, and agriculture photos.

Even though I think the book would be much stronger with half the number of images or less, buying this for $65 is an absolute no-brainer for anyone who loves photography. It is a gorgeous tome, with some truly spectacular images that deserve to be seen in print.

Review: The layout and the quality of the amazing photographs in this book are stunning. I couldn’t resist it so before I wrapped this gift up, I took a gentle peek inside! And now I’m honestly thinking I will buy this again for myself! I loved it that much ~ it has you wondering how on earth the photographer has captured the angles of the topic so beautifully ~ truly wonderful book ~ highly recommend.

It arrived today — I didn’t realize how oversized it is! I couldn’t wait 3 weeks to give the gift so he got it today. We’ve looked at every picture and keep saying the next one is our favorite! Review: Yes, some people have complained that some images span 2 pages and the spine of the book interrupts the image. These images positively need to be seen in the largest possible way. Though I’m a 53 year old man, after 50 or 60 pages I began crying because of the sheer beauty of these animals.

This book has touched my heart in a way that very few others have come close to.
