If baseball has many fathers, does it not also have mothers? Is the legend that baseball is a descendant of “stool ball,” a game played as far back as the fifteenth century by milkmaids whose chores were done, apocryphal? Modest, tentative answers will be greatly appreciated, as will grandiose, definitive ones.
