Chapter Six: The Monster aka the Monster
Cue Theme Music
Remember when I talked about how Dustin is the beacon of reason (Chapter 4)? He says what is apparent to the audience, but hidden from the characters? This episode totally cements that.
I’d like to take this time to dig deeper into what makes the perfect monster. All the best ones are slimy, with long distorted hands and hunched backs. The noises they make are soft, gravelly, derivatives of ‘The Grudge’ noise. Where in our evolution did we suddenly take those characteristics to denote RUN LIKE HELL?
This also relates how we built our schema for ‘creepy’ (see Chapter 5 post). I have few ideas based on my experience with evolutionary psych, but some are pretty far-fetched. I’d rather save them for a conversation!
I did want to give out some more prizes this episode, however.
Honorable mentions:
1. Steve’s hair. I’m convinced it’s getting bigger
2. Putting a gun between you and your bed partner. Hope you have good chemistry
3. Banana bike seats
4. Psychedelic drug testing by the CIA. A great reference to a true event! Cheers to you, LSD & ethics.
5. The clowns on the baby’s mobile. Add in the movie It from 1990 and you have a generation of children saying bye-bye Barnum and Bailey.
1st Place: Frozen waffles. I effin’ love frozen waffles.
Last place: The misplaced life-lesson quote from the police office secretary.
“Only love makes you that crazy, sweetheart, and that damn stupid.”
A rough childhood, drug experiments, and the discovery of an alternate dimension can also really drive you mad though, am I right?
