High anticipation and lustre marked the day at Apple’s new spaceship campus as they hosted an event in the Steve Jobs Theatre. We finally laid eyes on a handful of long-awaited developments; some were foreseen, and some surprised us.

Initially, we were introduced to some lower-tier announcements such as the new Apple TV supporting 4k and HDR. Apple Watch Series 3 also caught our attention with its newly integrated cellular connection enabling phone calls.

Nonetheless, we were all there for the main event — the launch of the new iPhones — and boy, did Apple deliver. We were presented with not just one, but two new iPhones; iPhone 8 and 8 plus, along with a surprise addition of iPhone X. Some might ask about the missing iPhone 9, but it seems Apple decided to skate past that one altogether.

The iPhone 8 and 8 plus gave a nostalgic resemblance to the iPhone 7, with almost identical designs but with a couple of upgrades. Now equipped with a brand-new wireless charging compatible glass back and a True Tone display, the same screen sizes and resolutions persist. Powered by the A11 Bionic chip and slightly more advanced 12-megapixel cameras, the iPhone 8 series also offers a chic new rose gold colour reminiscent of copper tones.

But the real showstopper was the iPhone X. The edge-to-edge 5.8-inch OLED display is definitely a selling point, but the most intriguing aspect has to be the handling of the notorious notch in the display. Apple’s distinctive way of arranging the clock, signal and battery on either side of the notch, altering black or white based on the app’s background, definitely is a solution. Apps can now extend their display content right up to the notch providing immersive user experience like never before.

Another potential concern that has been well addressed is how the phone handles the absence of a home button, which has been replaced by a simple swipe-up gesture from the phone’s bottom. Swiping halfway up inaugurates the multitasking panel — an intuitive UX addition. Overall, there are three different swipe-down gestures on this new phone: one for notifications, one for the control centre and one in the middle.

If you are thinking about upgrading your phone, the new iPhone 10 is sure to catch your eye. It’s a significant departure from previous designs and boasts a wide array of advanced features that warrant a closer look.

One of the most notable changes is the home screen’s interaction design, which is entirely screen-based, thanks to the introduction of gestures. Even to wake the phone, a quick touch is enough. A complete elimination of buttons demands adjustment, but it’s a challenge many might willingly accept to experience this novel approach.

Then, there is the facial recognition feature, dubbed Face ID. It uses advanced front-facing camera sensors housed in an upper tab of the phone, replacing the Touch ID and fingerprint access system that Apple formerly used. The tech giant promises that there’s only a one in a million chance that someone else could unlock your phone — a claim that’s yet to be fully tested and reviewed.

The iPhone 10 flaunts new camera features as well. The phone is equipped with optically-stabilized twin 12-megapixel cameras, designed to perform better in low light and deliver superior video quality. Apple added more customization options for portrait mode, a move likely triggered by Samsung’s Note8. This includes different lighting effects that can dramatically change your photos and can be used with the front-facing camera as well, creating endless possibilities for upping your selfie game.

Furthermore, Apple introduced ‘Animojis’, animated emojis animated by your facial movements and voice, a fun addition to your texting experience. Some will certainly find the improved front-facing camera compelling enough to consider getting the new iPhone.

On top of these features, the iPhone 10 shares several other updates with the iPhone 8: spec bump to the A11 Bionic chip, the glass back that enables Qi wireless charging, a True Tone enabled OLED display, and more.

The phone, a beautiful hybrid of glass and metal, is priced at a cool thousand bucks and goes on sale in November. It’s not without its concerns, particularly around the display brightness and the larger power button that triggers Siri, but for those willing to spend, it offers an interesting package of tech sophistications.

In what seems like the end of an era of rumours, the curtain has finally been lifted off the highly anticipated iPhone 10. Alongside the reveal of the model 10, Apple has also introduced the 8 and 8 Plus, further expanding their already impressive line-up.

All these phones are set to undergo rigorous reviews in the coming weeks and months. If you’re as excited as we are, be sure to subscribe to our updates to be among the first to get all the insider details on these new releases. From our early observations, there’s a lot to like about the iPhone 10. It’s a solid blend of groundbreaking features and the classic Apple touch.
