As it happens, I recognized elements of myself in my son’s peculiarities right from the beginning. Being able to empathize with him, it felt very natural to defend his right to not have his nature crushed by the needs of others. I also recognize that few others are able to empathize with him, and it must be very challenging when their best efforts to accommodate him aren’t rewarded with success.
Defending your child from the suffocating needs of others and affording him the possibility of discovering his potential is a huge gift that not many children are offered. Your son is fortunate to have you watching out for him — too many parents don’t have the courage and confidence to advocate meaningfully for their children.
