Who wouldn’t want to be on the ground floor of the future?

While I have held many jobs in my life, nothing ever felt as if it would stick. Or rather, I didn’t feel as if I would stick. Pursuing my varied interests and strengths took me from flower shop assistant to construction worker, from art gallery assistant to storage unit property manager , and most recently, from call center representative to subrogation evaluator and auto damage adjuster, to just name a few. Despite my sincerest and best efforts, however, never along this journey did I feel the “this is what I am supposed to do for the rest of my life — and for the world” feeling. I want that feeling. After some soul-searching, I’ve come to realize what was missing for me at each of these career steps: a meaningful connection with the future.

This is why I want to become a software engineer. I want to be part of the future, part of the solution to problems we don’t even know exist yet, and part of a specialized industry continuously called upon to move our world forward. Software engineers have an endless possibility of ways to shape that future — for companies and for people. This endless possibility for tangible impact is why I want to be a software engineer. After all, with the very real prospects of self-driving cars, free Internet for all, and virtual reality, who wouldn’t want to be part of the future?

The Holberton School would be the ideal place for me to learn and perfect my skills as a full-stack software engineer to bring about that future. And maybe while I’m in the not-so-perfect stages, simply being surrounded by my creative peers would inspire and motivate me to persevere through any difficulties I might encounter. In addition to being set in the heart of uber-innovative San Francisco, a place I’ve dreamed about living in one day, the Holberton School seems to combine the technical excellence of the most prestigious software engineering schools with the openness and raw creativity of a meet-up group for beginner coders. This interesting and unique combination appeals strongly to me. Attending Holberton would enable me to learn not only from current experts in the field — from people at Apple, LinkedIn, Docker, Google, Instagram, Facebook, and others — but also from my peers. I want to make connections and help others, as well as ask for help myself from people who know much more than me and can teach me as I build and grow. I want to be at the Holberton School to learn from the best and from those who share my passion for building something new to benefit all. This is my future and our future. I’m ready for it.
