University of North Florida Celebrates Islamic Holiday, Ignores Columbus Day (and Good Friday)
The University of North Florida’s online calendar of events does not dare mention Columbus Day this year, but it does take note of a holiday called Al-Hijra. In fact, every single day on UNF’s October calendar references Al-Hijra as the very first item.
The UNF site helpfully explains that Al-Hijra is a “Muslim holiday which begins sundown October 1, 2016 and ends on October 30, 2016. It may be appropriate to limit university-wide activities on these dates in respect to those who observe this holiday.”
On Tuesday of this week, the UNF calendar reminds students of both Al-Hijra and Vijaya Dasharni, noting the latter as — “Hindu holiday; it may be appropriate to limit university-wide activities on this day in respect to those who observe this holiday.”
Since Monday’s Columbus Day doesn’t make it on the UNF calendar, perhaps their policy is to include only religious holidays and days that cause the university to skip classes?
Looking back a few months it seems that Good Friday (March 25) was not referenced on the student calendar at all. Yet every day between June 5 and July 5 was clearly identified as Ramadan.
Geee, I wonder why?
