The cost of staying in one of Macau’s many hotels and guesthouses for the third quarter reportedly rose an average of 5.57% year-on-year, with the Asian city’s overall tourist price index up 0.90% to 130.78 points over the three-month period.

Accommodation costs rose 9.14% quarter-on-quarter, and prices for goods such as handbags, clothing and jewelry fell, according to official information from the Enclave Statistical Survey, as “hotel room rates increased during the summer holidays.”

The government agency also said the overall tourist price index edged up 0.71 percent in the third quarter from the previous three months due to rising accommodation, alcohol, tobacco and food costs.

Things like food and services that Macau visitors typically buy are known to make up the majority of gamblers who go to more than 30 casinos.

The government also reportedly explained that the tourist price index, which does not include game-related services, jumped 6.15% and 2.78% in the first and second quarters, respectively, and rose 3.28% year-on-year.

On the other hand, the price index for clothing and shoes fell 7.91% quarter-on-quarter due to seasonal sales of summer clothing and handbags
