On The Hunt: Skimlinks

What is Skimlinks?

Skimlinks is a global e-commerce monetization and analytics technology start-up with offices in London and NYC. We work with over 1.5 million publisher websites (including Condé Nast, Hearst Magazines, NY Times) and 20,000 online retailers (including Net-A-Porter, Macys, Homebase) around the world, helping our publishers get paid commissions for the products and brands they write about. The Skimlinks platform gives our publishers instant access to over 20,000 affiliate programs. We have a direct view of the browsing and shopping behaviors of over 650 million users daily. Our technology understands the web pages users visit, the brands and products they look at, the links they click on and the purchases they make, across our entire network. Over $700m in ecommerce sales were transacted over our platform last year.

What’s the company culture like?

We are a hard-working bunch, but we know how to let our hair down.
There is consistently challenging work to tackle but we take the time to enjoy ourselves too. There are parties, company trips, ping pong tournaments (Skimbledon), rugby leagues, football games, pub quizzes and much more on offer.
We have a beautiful office near Old St, where we have free breakfasts, catered lunches and a beer & wine fridge. We have a ping-pong room, breakout areas and we are pet friendly!
We host meet-ups, brown bag lunches, product demos and have dedicated training time set aside for each and every team member (Skimovation time).
We are very proud of our company culture.

What’s the ambition of the company?

To continue to find innovative ways to help publishers get rewarded for the role their content plays in creating shopping intent.

How did you hear about Unicorn Hunt and what do you like about it?

We are consistently hiring for tech roles and heard that Unicorn Hunt was a great source of high calibre candidates.

What is your one piece of advice for startups that are hiring?

Be honest and manage expectations! We try to give the “warts & all” view to prospective candidates of what life is like at Skimlinks. We set out the current expectations for the role we’re hiring for and explain how that may change as the business evolves. Candidates need to be prepared for the fluid nature of a startup and how that might affect their day-to-day role.

What is your one piece of advice for job seekers when applying to your company?

Embrace your entrepreneurial side. It takes a specific type of person to work at a startup. The odd hours, intense energy and unique working environment aren’t for everyone and when hiring, we look for individuals that have that internal self-starting drive within them, that can deal with ambiguity and that are happy to ‘muck in’ even when a task is not typically within their job description.

If your company was a tea time treat what would it be and why?

I think we would be a classic chocolate teacake. We have a really solid base, a glossy coating and lots of exciting stuff going on in the middle.
