The 8 Health Moonshot Principles: StartUp Health’s Blueprint for Achieving the Impossible

It started with an impossible dream: a 25-year plan to transform global health by investing in and uniting a global army committed to achieving health moonshots.

When we launched StartUp Health at the beginning of 2011, we didn’t know the details. Heck, we didn’t even have a website. All we had was a commitment to our vision, an idea for a novel collaborative innovation model, and a belief that if the world could put a person on the Moon and deliver them safely home again — all in only 10 years — then in today’s golden era of innovation and abundance, we should be thinking more boldly about how to solve the world’s most pressing health challenges. …

“We grew out of Google and Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information,” said Jessica Mega, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer, Verily Life Sciences. “But there’s a whole sector of life science and health that has its own environment, and there was a small group thinking about what information in healthcare would we need to collect differently, organize and activate.”

Dr. Mega joined me in a discussion at the 2018 StartUp Health Festival in San Francisco, California. We began our conversation learning more about her journey as a doctorpreneur, and then dove into the healthcare and life science-based company’s moonshot, and how Verily is using next-generation tools and technologies to take on significant challenges impacting global health. …

“We want to bring technology to scientists so that we can augment their decision-making on what drugs to invest their time, knowledge, and resources in,” said Naheed Kurji, ‎President & CEO, Cyclica. “Our goal as a company is not to just be one tool for one scientist, but to be that utility platform that all scientists rely on every day.”
