How to Migrate to Ontario from India as a Healthcare Worker?
Primarily, there are two pathways:
Pathway 1: Express Entry
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced “category-based selection draws” for Express Entry in 2023. Since then, numerous immigrants from India have applied for Canada PR visas and settled in the country.
These draws targeted six categories, encompassing 35 National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes within the Healthcare Occupations category. To qualify, you must:
- Possess a minimum of 6 months of full-time, consecutive work experience in Canada or abroad (within the last 3 years) in one of the 35 NOCs specified for the Healthcare Occupations Category.
- Fulfill all requirements outlined in the instructions for the respective draw.
Pathway 2: Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Opt for the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program’s (OINP) Express Entry stream — Human Capital Priorities (HCP) stream, designed to attract skilled foreign professionals to settle in Ontario permanently.
Prerequisites for application:
- Accumulate at least 1 year of full-time or equivalent work experience in the sought-after occupations.
- Possess a Canadian bachelor’s degree or higher (or its equivalent).
- Demonstrate language proficiency at a minimum CLB/NCLC level 7 in English or French.
- Express intent to reside in Ontario.
- Provide evidence of financial means to support yourself and your dependents upon settling in Ontario.
To initiate the process, you must first meet the eligibility criteria for the federal Express Entry program and be included in the Express Entry pool through the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) or Canadian Experience Class (CEC) streams.
Ontario selects candidates with robust educational backgrounds and relevant work experience for nomination for PR. Upon selection, you will receive a Notification of Interest (NOI) from the OINP based on your Express Entry profile, inviting you to apply for nomination under the HCP stream. You will be allotted 45 calendar days to submit a comprehensive application with all requisite information and documents.
Upon approval of your application, Ontario will notify you, allowing you to proceed with applying for PR through federal programs.
How Long Does the Process Take?
On average, applications submitted through federal Express Entry programs are processed within 5–6 months, potentially shorter depending on the thoroughness of your application. Skilled professionals are given priority in category-based selection draws.
Conversely, PR applications under Ontario’s Express Entry — Human Capital Priorities stream are typically processed within 60 to 90 days.
