Justice League Movie Roster

The Heroes We Can Look Forward to Seeing

Not long ago there was a controversial article published that speculated what characters would be in the officially announced Justice League movie. If you look at the comments section you’ll likely notice a collection of commentators berating the author for some gross misrepresentations of their favorite DC heroes. While the team member selection for the League seemed spot on, fans protested against some obvious oversights made by the author.

What bothered readers the most was the writer’s approach, who attempted to garner excitement for the film by comparing each hero to a hero from the now wildly famous Avengers team. While the list was clearly intended for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe who may be unfamiliar with DC, what started as an innocent attempt came off instead as an unfortunate horror show. Anyone unacquainted with the DCU may leave with the assumption that names such as Batman and Superman are cheap imitations of Captain America and Thor.

In order to clear up a few things, here is an updated roster of probable Justice League heroes and who you should not make the mistake of comparing them to.

1. SUPERMAN — aka: Kal-El, Clark Kent, Supes, The Man of Steel, & The Last Son of Krypton.

First on our list is perhaps the most well-known hero of all time. An alien from a destroyed world, he spends his free time writing for the Daily Planet newspaper. As it turns out, it’s a good way to find bad guys. Most of his back-story was established in last year’s Man of Steel, so it’s unlikely that they’ll spend too much time explaining old Supes. I anticipate we’ll see a character recovering from the murder of fellow Kryptonian, Zod.

What he brings to the team: Superman is the shining star of the Justice League. He has all the qualities of a classic hero (because he is the classic hero) and is the go to guy for the most physically demanding challenges. Many people look up to him because of his great strength and morals. In the upcoming movie he’ll probably be what the action centers around when Batman comes in and tries to take him down a peg. They’ll likely squabble at first, as the two heroes are known to do, but soon discover there’s greater evil to be undone.

Who shouldn’t compare him to: Thor. They may both be the strongest beings from their respective worlds, but that is where the similarities end. Thor is the Norse God of Thunder and shamelessly dons the style of a classic Viking. As a mythical God who’s next in line to be king, he has almost nothing in common with a farm boy from Kansas.

2. Batman — aka: Bruce Wayne, Bats, The Dark Knight, & The World’s Greatest Detective.

As a child, young billionaire Bruce Wayne watched as his parents were gunned down in the streets. Bruce vowed to protect the city and so he donned the cowl of Batman. Pushing his body and mind to their limits, he became one of the strongest and most intelligent non-super powered human beings in the world.

It’s unlikely that we’ll get much back-story from Batman either since he was so well developed in The Dark Knight Trilogy. Although this seems to be a very different Batman from the one Christopher Nolan created, the story is still fresh in our memory.

What he brings to the team: As one of the smartest people in the world, Batman is a strategic mastermind. Still, he can often be found on the battlefield or stalking his enemies in the shadows. His essentially limitless access to funding means he also provides high-tech support. As recent photos of Ben Affleck’s Batman revealed, his design was based off of Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, which is about the craziest looking Batman you’ve ever seen.

Who you shouldn’t compare him to: Captain America. A lot of people have the bad habit of comparing these two because they are both the humans of their team, but they actually have little in common. One is a soldier, the other a shadow-bound ninja. As far as personalities go, Batman is known to be much more serious than just about anyone you know.

3. Wonder Woman — aka: Diana Prince, The Amazonian Woman, & Princess Diana.

Wonder Woman is the daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus, which means she has all the powers of a demi-god. She comes from an island of Amazonian female warriors called Themyscira, where mankind is forbidden. As a daughter of Olympus, she has a rich history of lore and mythos to support her character, which is played in the upcoming film by actress Gal Gadot.

What she brings to the team: Wonder Woman is a warrior. She has strength and abilities that match, and often surpass, those of Superman and she has a battle-lust unmatched by any other member of the team. How her heritage will play into the movie is uncertain, but it is unlikely that the heroes will be meeting the Greek Pantheon any time soon. One thing is for sure, having Wonder Woman finally hit the big screen is definitely something to be excited about.

Who you shouldn’t compare her to: Black Widow. By far the biggest blunder made in the aforementioned article was the comparison of Wonder Woman to Black Widow. To say that these two very powerful women are alike in any way is like saying all females are similar merely on the basis of their chromosomes. Can gods even donate chromosomes? While Black Widow is often involved in various forms of espionage and intelligence-gathering, Wonder Woman is more often in a fight, destroying her enemies with the same force as Superman or Thor.

4. Green Lantern — aka: The Emerald Knight, The Space Police & GL.

As some of you may know, The Green Lantern is actually a title for an intergalactic police officer. There are literally thousands of these guys that patrol the universe and protect it from alien threats. Their power source: a green power ring created by a council of little blue guys. The rings are charged by a green-light-emitting-lantern and can be used to create literally anything you can imagine. The most famous member of the Green Lanterns is Hal Jordan, a test-pilot, who is likely the one to fill the green shoes in the Justice League movie.

What he brings to the team: As wielder of what many consider one of the most powerful weapons in the galaxy, Green Lantern has nearly infinite possibilities. The ring allows him to create “hard light constructs,” which literally means he can make anything he can imagine out of green light. Whether it’s a machinegun, a fighter jet, or a submarine, GL can make it. This makes him one of the most versatile and useful members of the Justice League. There is almost always a Green Lantern around, it just wouldn’t be the same without him.

Who you shouldn’t compare him to: Any space faring hero, such as Silver Surfer. It’s tough to find anyone to compare to GL because he is such a unique hero, and none of the Avengers really come close. Still, what makes GL so unique is that he is essentially a police officer… in space, who can make whatever he wants. I anticipate Green Lantern is going to be one of the most fun characters to see on screen.

5. The Flash — aka: The Crimson Comet & The Scarlet Speedster.

Like Green Lantern, The Flash is a name carried by many heroes. The most famous of them is Barry Allen, a police scientist who gained his powers in a freak lab accident involving some chemicals and, of course, a lightning bolt. Coincidentally, the many iterations of The Flash and Green Lantern are known to have close friendships. While neither of these characters have been confirmed for the Justice League movie, it’s unlikely that they won’t have an honored spot reserved for them.

What he brings to the team: You can usually find The Flash zipping across the battlefield (or the planet) fighting bad guys before they even know what hit them. He also has a few powers that some people may not know about since he hasn’t really had a fair shot on the big screen. He can think and react at super-human speeds, create tornadoes by running or spinning his arms, travel through time, and even phase through solid objects by vibrating his atoms. The CW’s exciting new Flash TV series looks like a promising venue for the character, but hopefully the upcoming film can really show off his dynamic abilities.

Who you shouldn’t compare him to: Quicksilver. This one goes without saying, especially now with his rising popularity thanks to recent movie appearances. These two characters are somewhat more difficult than others to disentangle since super-speed only comes in so many flavors. True, they have similar powers and share the same sort of ADHD view of the world, but their differences stem from very different personalities. Barry Allen is a scientist, while Quicksilver is a former-villain turned hero with the heart of a punk kid.

6. Cyborg –aka:, Cy, Robotman, & Victor Stone

While visiting his estranged father’s lab, Victor is involved in a terrible accident that causes him to lose most of his body. In order to save him, his father attaches advanced cybernetics to his body, replacing most of his and brain with advanced robotics. His character was recently confirmed to be played actor Ray Fisher, but what role he will have is uncertain.

What he brings to the team: Cyborg provides a much needed technological component to the team. Various parts of his body transform into different kinds of weaponry or computer components and he has a constant wireless connection to just about every computer on Earth. So when he isn’t fighting villains with laser cannons or rockets, he’s hacking into high-tech computers with his mind.

Who you shouldn’t compare him to: Ironman. Yes, they’re both genius men who use advanced technology to fight their enemies, but on almost every other level they are entirely different. Tony Stark is a scientist and CEO in a powerful suit, while Cyborg is a high school quarterback. Interestingly, both of them represent dying men saved by technology.

7. Aquaman — aka: The King of Atlantis, King of the Seas, Arthur Curry, & Fishbreath

Aquaman is probably the most controversial member of the team. Often criticized for being the worst of all the JL heroes, he has somehow remained a staple member of the League. Arthur Curry is the half human, half Atlantean king of Atlantis and is actually pretty amazing. He’s also married to Mera, an assassin who was trained her entire life to kill him, but found she couldn’t do it when they finally met. Sounds like a pretty great guy.

What he brings to the team: Aquaman is a talented fighter and a compassionate person. His powers are obviously water related, like the ability to command sea creatures and breathe underwater, but he is just as capable on land. If you’re anywhere near water, he’s someone you’re going to want by your side.

Who you shouldn’t compare him to: Once again there aren’t many characters that are similar to Aquaman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The closest is perhaps Thor, insofar as they are both leaders of their respective kingdoms. They also both face similar issues when it comes to their ties with their home worlds.

There are tons of other potential heroes that could be on the list, but none of them are as consistent as these few. As any comic book fan could tell you, comparing heroes is usually tons of fun, but sometimes it’s better to look at what the heroes can do on their own. There’s a lot to look forward to with the upcoming films, but no matter what choices they make, we should all hope for a resounding success.
