Punch Efficiency Comparison Between Amir ‘King’ Khan and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez

Khan gunning for the middleweight championship belt of Alvarez at a catchweight is a bad idea, albeit an interesting one. I plotted their last five fights for comparison which revealed that Alvarez has a punch efficiency (landed punches/thrown punches) .44 point higher than Khan’s, a dangerous margin to capitalize on for the latter considering the weight class difference.

However, it seems like Khan’s claim that Alvarez is ‘beatable’ has solid grounds: the punch efficiency (SD 16.22) of Alvarez is volatile by nature. The erratic upswings and downswings are guided by the ability of his opponent, where Alvarez suffered a performance low of 22% punch efficiency at the hands of Mayweather (x0,y22). Khan’s punching efficiency(SD 6.22), gleaned from the chart provided, is considerably more stable compared to the punch efficiency of Alvarez.

Khan is an elite boxer, he’s an olympic boxer who represented Great Britain, but he has a suspect chin. Khan notched 1 RTD in his last 5 fights. How it compares to the 1 KO, 1 TKO, and 1 LOSS of Alvarez in his last 5 fights is anybody’s guess, but a fight between the two can be bigger than the Mayweather-Pacquiao letdown.
