Untamed Elephants Uses Chainlink VRF to Bring Trust and Transparency to NFT Charity Donation Drives
As one of the largest, most charity-driven NFT communities in the world, Untamed Elephants has a duty to establish trust and transparency at all levels. This is why we’re excited to announce that we’re using an official integration of Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) to fulfill these two cornerstones of our community. By integrating the industry-leading decentralized oracle network, we now have access to a tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness needed to randomly determine which users who donate during Stampede Sunday receive prizes.

Every Sunday, Untamed Elephants hosts a charity donation drive where anyone who makes a $20+ donation to an elephant charity or purchases one of our Elephant NFTs is eligible to win prizes, ranging from NFTs to merchandise from small businesses and entrepreneurs. To date, through events like #StampedeSunday, we’ve raised over $55,000 for elephant causes!
We rely on Chainlink VRF to help ensure that the winner in our giveaways is chosen in a transparent and unbiased manner, most notably because it allows anyone to audit the results and make sure we didn’t just pick our friends/family. How it works is that if 100 people enter our giveaway, we send a request to Chainlink VRF to return a random number between 1 and 100, and that number is then recorded on the blockchain for all to see.
We ultimately selected Chainlink VRF over other solutions because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by time-tested oracle infrastructure, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that prove the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.
Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The Untamed Elephants application will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This helps provide our donors with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that the distribution of rewards is provably fair and was not tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or the Untamed Elephants team.
Merge Event
One of the most exciting upcoming events for Untamed Elephants is our merge event, where holders of our Elephant NFTs and Companion NFTs can burn both to create a new NFT, which represents our highest level of DAO membership. There will likely be an element of randomness during this burn event, and we are excited to have Chainlink VRF at our disposal to help ensure that that randomness is truly random, verifiable, and tamper-proof.
