Here in the Lab, we are proud to dive into a key release to take place in the near future which is VV Social. Our scientists & researchers have been on a two-year study to develop the best way to create the ‘central hub’ for Virtual Version avatars and individual's online worlds.

Introduction: In recent years, social media apps have become an integral part of our daily lives. These platforms allow us to connect with friends and family, share our experiences, and stay up-to-date on current events. However, as these apps have grown in popularity, concerns have been raised about the impact they have on our mental and emotional well-being, as well as the amount of sensitive data gathered. One way in which social media apps are attempting to address these concerns is through the use of avatars.

Background: VV Social is a social media platform that pairs individuals with a high-fidelity Virtual Version, which can be used in VR, AR, Web2, Web3, and metaverse applications. The app is expected to launch in 2023 and has gained significant interest in a short period of time. An App that provides individuals with a ‘central hub’ for their digital world.

Methods: In order to analyze the use of avatars in social media, we conducted a case study. The study consisted of a survey of 50,000+ users, as well as in-depth interviews with 8 of the users. The survey asked users about the avatar creation process, overall satisfaction, and a few questions surrounding where users would like to use their avatars. The in-depth interviews provided a more detailed understanding of use cases, which has allowed us to build user-focused first in a ‘lean start up’ fashion.

Results: Overall, the results of the study indicate that Virtual Versions/VV Social, have multiple use cases in demand. The majority of users reported that they found the avatar fun and would like to be able to enter different gamified experiences with their avatars. Additionally, feedback suggested that users felt more comfortable communicating with others when using their avatars.

Discussion: The use of avatars in social media has the potential to address some of the negative effects of social platforms. By allowing users to communicate through a digital representation of themselves, avatars can provide a sense of anonymity and safety that can be beneficial for those who may be hesitant to share personal information online. Individuals were particularly impressed with their data being owned by them and the number of benefits that come from that, with most opting in for data monetization. Additionally, the highly customizable nature of avatars on VV Social allows users to express themselves in unique ways, which can be beneficial for self-expression and personal identity formation.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the use of avatars in social media, as exemplified by VV Social, has the potential to positively impact users’ mental and emotional well-being as well as provide individuals a place to access virtual environments with is, all while protecting their digital data. It can allow users to communicate in a safe and anonymous way, and also provides them with an opportunity for self-expression and personal identity formation. Further research is needed to fully understand the impact of avatars on social media, but the results of this case study suggest that they are a promising avenue for improving the overall experience of social media.
